Il 30 ottobre 1949, i contadini di Melissa, un paesino in provincia di Crotone, occuparono le terre incolte appartenenti ai baroni Berlingeri, gli ultimi dei feudatari che vessavano la comunità da secoli. L’occupazione ebbe successo ma, quando la gente stava già rientrando alle proprie case, la polizia mandata da Mario Scelba, allora ministro dell’Interno, sparò senza motivo alcuno sulla folla. Francesco Nigro e Giovanni Zito rimasero a terra. Angelina Mauro morì in ospedale dopo qualche giorno di agonia. Quindici furono i feriti.

In the summer of 2003, John Poindexter was the overseer of DARFA's (Defence Research Projects Agency) attempt to institute a web based futures market that Dept. of War officials said could help forecast catastrophic events. Traders would hope to profit financially from their betting on terror. Deputy fo War Sec'ty Paul Wolfowitz called Poindexter's team "brilliantly imaginative." Sen. Barbara Boxer called the program "morbid" and "a sick idea."

Rainbow Warriors
was written in praise of the Greenpeace ship and after reading a poem from the Native American tradition, called 'In beauty may I walk', the words of which were reproduced in the Rattle Bag anthology by Seamus Heaney and Ted Hughes. In the end the song came out nothing much like the poem, but I kept the idea of walking, and I gave it a sort of muted war drum beat.
It's an anthem for all peace/eco activists.

In Jan 2002, John Ashcroft spent $8,650 to cover up the Spirit of Justice statue in the Hall of Justice because he didn't want to do press conferences in front of her exposed breast. The official line from the attorney generals office was that she was covered up for "aesthetic purposes". Still the metaphor is not lost. His censorship and abuse of power has been compared to Hitler's closing of the Bauhaus School of Design in 1933 at around the same time that he was creating his Security of the Fatherland, aka SS.

Il catalano Francesc Ferrer i Guàrdia (1859-1909) è stato un libero pensatore pacifista e anticlericale e un pedagogista libertario. Fondò a Barcellona la cosiddetta “Escuela Moderna” per l’educazione razionale che - in un sistema educativo allora saldamente in mano alla retriva e oscurantista chiesa cattolica - nel 1906 arrivò a contare un paio di migliaia di allievi. Ma nel 1907 Ferrer fu accusato di aver avuto un qualche ruolo in un attentato contro il Re Alfonso XIII e, anche se scagionato, la sua scuola fu additata come covo di facinorosi anarchici e costretta a chiudere.
Però governo e chiesa non si accontentarono, Ferrer era troppo scomodo e lo volevano morto.

This song - from the album "Boys Of The Island" - is about John Condon, the youngest Irish soldier to be killed in the Great War 1914-18. He was a number of days short of his fourteenth birthday.. The song stuck me to the ground on hearing it.

John Condon (5 October 1896 - 24 May 1915) was an Irish soldier long believed to have been the youngest Allied soldier killed during the First World War, at the age of 14 years, as shown on his gravestone.
It is now believed from a birth certificate, census, war diaries and other records that John Condon would have been 18 years old at the recorded date of his death and that the wrong individual is named on the grave. At the present time, the headstone in Poelkapelle Cemetery and the CWGC record continue to assert the challenged data.
