Credo che questa canzone sia sta scritta da Theodorakis, in memoria di due eventi che di fatto segnarono l’inizio della fine della dittatura dei colonnelli: la rivolta dei marinai del cacciatorpediniere Velos, nel maggio del 1973, e la repressione del movimento studentesco ad Atene, nel novembre dello stesso anno.
Il 23 maggio 1973, l’equipaggio di una nave da guerra greca impegnata in manovre NATO in acque territoriali italiane, decise una forma estrema di protesta in seguito a notizie che riferivano l’arresto in Grecia di alcuni ufficiali contrari al regime… Il comandante Nicholaos Pappas comunicò che lui e tutti i marinai del Velos erano solidali con gli oppositori arrestati e contrari alla dittatura. Poi la nave fece rotta verso la costa italiana e quindi Pappas... (continuer)

Scritta dallo stesso Theodorakis quando – io credo – nell’ottobre del 1969 i fascisti lo trasferirono dal confino sulle montagne di Zatouna nuovamente in carcere, ad Oropos, prima di lasciarlo partire l’anno seguente per l’esilio in Francia:
“[…] Finally, Mikis was taken from Zatouna to Oropos Prison, outside of Athens, in October of 1969. Once again he was among people, and this period proved to be one of his most creative, because of this stimulus. He began work on a new symphonic work based on another Seferis poem, "Raven: In Memoriam of E.A.P. ". He also wrote songs to some African poetry. Scritta dallo stesso Theodorakis quando – io credo – nell’ottobre del 1969 i fascisti lo trasferirono dal confino sulle montagne di Zatouna nuovamente in carcere, ad Oropos, prima di lasciarlo partire l’anno seguente per l’esilio in Francia:
“[…] Finally, Mikis was taken from Zatouna to Oropos Prison, outside of Athens, in October of 1969. Once again he was among people, and this period proved to be one of his most creative, because of this stimulus. He began work on a new symphonic work based on another Seferis poem, "Raven: In Memoriam of E.A.P. ". He also wrote songs to some African poetry. Farewell To Sicily
Carissimi, solo una precisazione ma doverosa. L'aria "Farewell to the CReeks" fu composta dal Pipe Major James Robertson in ricordo della fattoria di suo zio nelle vicinanze di Creeks of Portknockie nella regione del Banffshire , nella quela da bambino era solito passare le vacanze. L'aria fu scritta durante la prima guerra mondiale. Hamish la sentì suonare per la prima volta ben 25 anni dopo, perchè nel tempo "Farewell to the Creeks" era entrata nel reperorio delle pipe band scozzesi.
Infine vorrei segnalare altre bellissime versioni di "Banks of Sicily". Dick Gaughan, nel tempo, l'ha riproposta in maniera differente; il grande Dominic Behan sul finire degli anni 50, e più recentemente Geordie McIntyre e Owen Hand assieme ai Whistlebinkies-
Per quanto concerne la sèlendida traduzione di Amleto Micozzi, End of a campaign, l'originale, è nel libro di Hamish Henderson , Elegies for the dead in Cyrenaica.

Ho assistito venerdi 26 febbraio 2010,ad un magnifico concerto di Francesco a Perugia,canzone bellissima.Non dobbiamo dimenticare quello che hanno fatto i partigiani per noi,anche questo è un modo per trasmettere ai nostri giovani(che affollano peraltro i concerti di Francesco)i valori della resistenza.

Marco Valdo M.I., d'ascendance lyonnaise, et donc de parenté rabelaisienne, dans un moment de distraction avait traduit le dernier couplet d'une façon assez libre – ce qui somme toute, étant donné le sujet, s'imposait :

La Métamorphose des Escargots est la nonante-quatrième chanson du Cycle du Cahier ligné, constitué d'éléments tirés du Quaderno a Cancelli de Carlo Levi.
Vois-tu, Lucien l'âne mon ami, comme souvent, la canzone d'aujourd'hui a un titre étrange, elle s'intitule : La Métamorphose des Escargots. Si elle s'était intitulée simplement La Métamorphose, on aurait pu y voir une allusion et un hommage à Franz Kafka(ce qu'elle est, d'ailleurs), jeune homme tchèque doué pour l'écriture et sans doute, un des grands novateurs de littérature du siècle dernier – à tout le moins. Par parenthèse, son nom - si, c'est là une manie de traducteur, on le traduisait en français - donnerait quelque chose de tout aussi mystérieux : François Chouca.
