The song Easter was written in mid-2024, and we first rehearsed it by the beach in Wye River, on the southern coast of Australia, where we spent the weekend together playing new songs and hanging out at the Wye River pub. Easter is a narrative song that tells the story of the Easter Uprising in Dublin in 1916. The lyrics encompasses the memories of those actually involved. The background is that Ireland was tired of British rule, brutal oppression and broken promises of home-rule, and while England were engaged with the First World War, Ireland took its chance at becoming sovereign. The uprising was defeated after a week with the leaders being executed and many others imprisoned, but these brave Irish women and men pathed the way for the republic of Ireland a number of years later. This song continues to tell their stories, and pays respect to their bravery that has impacted the generations after them. May they never be forgotten.

The clearest example of this ideological corruption is nationalism’s ongoing acceptance of ‘Internment By Remand’, the imprisonment of republican political activists using sham ‘evidence’ from Mi5 and the PSNI, which everyone knows will not be accepted at any upcoming trial but is used to take men and women off the streets and keep them on remand for 2 – 4 years at a time. It’s believed that over 11,000 days have been lost by victims of this tactic with constitutional nationalism turning a blind. The song was the first single from the album released on August 9th, the date of the original internment operations of 1971.

Lyra McKee was an investigative journalist from Belfast. She was killed whilst observing a riot in Derry, Northern Ireland in April 2019. She was 29. In her 2017 TED talk she spoke movingly of the moment she came out to her mum. ‘Don’t tell me there’s no hope,’ she said. Her family are still campaigning for #Justice4Lyra. The first three lines are taken from the traditional song The Croppy Boy.

Richard Moore grew up in Derry, Northern Ireland. He described his childhood as growing up in a war zone. When he was 10 years old in 1972 he was hit by a rubber bullet on his way home from school. He was blinded for life. With the help of his devoted family and community he rebuilt his life and went on to found Children in Crossfire, a charity which has for 30 years helped vulnerable young people in developing nations. In 2007 he found, befriended and forgave the soldier who fired the bullet. The Dalai Lama wrote ‘I preach forgiveness, Richard Moore lives it.’

"Oh Dolours" is an ode to Dolours Price, a radical feminist and volunteer in the Irish Republican Army. It's an exploration of the sacrifices people make in the name of liberation, and what kinds of compromises are actually worth the cost — particularly for women, who face sexist double standards even in militant resistance. We recruited the singers from Indoor Friends to join us in the third verse, to make sure that women's voices were actually heard.

I quattro brani che compongono l’ep sono l’ideale proseguimento del discorso intrapreso nel 2023 con l’album precedente: raccontare storie vere di personalità legate alla storia culturale e politica irlandese, attraverso un suono che tiene conto sia della tradizione che del contesto attuale. "Roger David Casement (1864 – 1916) was a humanitarian campaigner and an Irish patriot, poet, revolutionary, and nationalist. He was a British consul, famous for his reports and activities against human rights abuses in the Congo and Peru and also for his dealings with Germany before Ireland’s Easter Rising in 1916. An Irish nationalist and Parnellite in his youth, he worked in Africa for commercial interests and later in the service of Britain. However, the Boer War and his consular investigation into atrocities in the Congo led Casement to anti-Imperialist and, ultimately, to Irish Republican and separatist political opinions. He sought to obtain German support for a rebellion in Ireland against British rule. Shortly before the Easter Rising, he landed in Ireland and was arrested. In these days of relative calm in the north-eastern section of Ireland the Police Service of Northern Ireland proudly claims to be ‘Making Northern Ireland Safer’. They’ll have you believe that they’ve moved on from the notorious days of the B-Specials and Royal Ulster Constabulary. The residents and Ciarán Murphy know differently and Once Upon A Time In Ireland opens with a angry blistering attack on Northern Ireland’s police force that is more punk rock than any punk song I ever heard.
Armed only with an acoustic guitar, Ciarán comes across sometimes as a one-man punk army.

The guitar picking on ‘You Cried for Ten Men Dead’ is simply outstanding. This track never fails to leave me in tears, as Ciaran sings to his father about the impact of Ireland’s struggle on the old man. From fighting for Great Britain in World War II, to joining a revolutionary army in Ireland, to crying for the ten hunger strikers who died in the Maze prison in 1981. The old man fell under the spell of whiskey and was unable to keep it together. Simply breathtaking.
