I know it's not particularly inspiring or poetic--; but it shows that a verse that functionally works, at least can be written.
Shame on you, Bernie Taupin, for throwing your original version away, which I'm sure would have been far better than this--;
But at the least, you could have used your condensed version for the advance-release single, while using the full version on the album--;
Just as had already been done with other epic pop or rock songs, such as Don McLean's 1971 "American Pie," and probably Led Zeppelin's 1971 "Stairway To Heaven."

"La città vecchia" is set in old Genoa where De André spent much time, with its little back alleyways, bars, prostitutes, and the hard lives of the poor people and criminals who lived there on the margins of society, the opposite of what De André experienced with his own upper-middle class upbringing. The song was inspired by a poem of the same name by Umberto Saba set in the port zone of Trieste. And the first two lines are quite similar to lines from a poem by Jacques Prévert, "Embrasse moi": "The sun of the good Lord doesn't shine on our parts/It already has too much to do in the rich quarters." Throughout his songwriting career, De André regularly took inspiration from and borrowed from other works of literature and music. (Translation notes: 1. I think the above mentioned page shows well which kind of relationship I have had with Juan Rodolfo Wilcock since my teenage years; the page also includes, in a ”little afterword” (even translated into French by Marco Valdo M.I.), another poem by the Argentine who wrote “in a sort of Italian” (as he used to say) hidden between the Roman nebulae and Lubriano, in the province of Viterbo. That poem, originating from some year in the 60's, is included in a bunch of poems called: “For the cat”, also including the following poem. Juan Rodolfo Wilcock must have had a son, and I have none. “Putting things in a cosmological time scale is significant in that it should definitely make us realize and acknowledge our responsibility for the environment we live in”, writes Juha Rämö as a companion to his Finnish translation of this song (as far as I know or can remember, this is the first Finnish translation he made directly from Italian and I find it really great). Deproducers have issued in 2017 an entire album, “Botanica”, dedicated to plants and to the vegetal world: I think Juha Rämö's observation may find in this album still more force. Unfortunately, no lyrics are available and I'll have to cope with, at least for one piece exemplifying well what I am saying. For my English translation, or rendering, of this song, I have chosen to include a video by AMNH on the known Universe, also a song in itself.

Entrambi nati dal movimento punk, hanno cantato in maniera provocatoria inni religiosi o odi alla Madonna, per poi, con l'età, (ri)scoprire la fede e convertirsi al cristianesimo.
Ma le analogie finiscono qui. Primo, perché Nina Hagen, a differenza di Ferretti ha sempre saputo cantare! Secondo, perché per la Hagen la conversione religiosa non si è certo accompagnata a una virata verso il più bieco reazionarismo, come è successo per Ferretti, anzi la cantante tedesca ha recentemente pubblicato un album dedicato a canzoni di protesta e di libertà e, nonostante le dichiarazioni bislacche sugli UFO e su Gesù, continuiamo ad ammirarla e a volerle bene!

Ascoltando questa trasposizione punk del Padre Nostro, che comunque dobbiamo inserire perché fin dai primi versi è una vera e propria preghiera per la pace, sarebbe fin troppo facile fare paragoni tra Nina Hagen e il nostro Giovanni Lindo Ferretti. Entrambi nati dal movimento punk, hanno cantato in maniera provocatoria inni religiosi o odi alla Madonna, per poi, con l'età, (ri)scoprire la fede e convertirsi al cristianesimo.

In quest'album estremamente politico i Mudhoney si scagliano contro i peggiori farisei della politica americana, i telepredicatori delle varie chiese evangeliche, che credono nella teoria del cosiddetto "Vangelo della Prosperità". Secondo questa corrente di pensiero, che fa abbastanza a pugni con il messaggio di Cristo, la ricchezza materiale deriva da una sorta di premio, di benedizione concessa da Dio. Mentre al contrario i poveri sarebbero tali per una sorta di punizione divina.
Nella canzone si elencano tutte le peggiori nefandezze che ti possono portare ad accumulare denaro, tra cui speculare sulle medicine e costruire armi. Ma grazie al Vangelo della Prosperità, diventi ricco e vinci. Night and Fog, come Nuit et brouillard: il riferimento è al decreto Nacht und Nebel emanato dal regime nazista nel 1941. Il decreto intitolato ufficialmente Richtlinien für die Verfolgung von Straftaten gegen das Reich oder die Besatzungsmacht in den besetzten Gebieten (Direttive per la persecuzione delle infrazioni commesse contro il Reich o contro le forze di occupazione nei territori occupati), prevedeva ordini specifici su come trattare i dissidenti politici, gli oppositori e i resistenti al regime: dovevano essere fermati e fatti scomparire "nella notte e nella nebbia", diceva testualmente Hitler, segretamente arrestati e deportati senza dare altro tipo di informazione sulla loro detenzione.

Una canzone ironica sulle innumerevoli sparatorie di massa, ormai una tragica routine negli USA. Caro uomo con la pistola se ci devi uccidere per favore fallo la domenica mentre siamo in chiesa, in modo da spedirci direttamente in paradiso. Al centro commerciale consumiamo troppi beni materiali, a scuola studiamo l'evoluzione (peccato mortale!), nei locali notturni siamo ebbri di piacere e rock'n'roll... quindi ti prego aspetta la domenica.
In effetti alcuni pistoleri hanno colpito proprio durante le funzioni religiose, ad esempio a Charleston nel 2015 o a Sutherland Springs nel 2017!

Scritta in seguito all'uccisione di un diciassettenne nero a Chicago da parte della polizia e a sostegno del movimento Black Lives Matter.
Il video mostra come Laquan McDonald, 17 anni, pur avendo un coltello in mano non rappresentasse in quel momento alcuna minaccia per i poliziotti intervenuti. Camminava in mezzo alla strada, al centro della carreggiata. E' passato a fianco di alcune auto della polizia, ma tenendosi bene alla larga, anzi, allontanandosi. Nessun cenno di aggressione. A riprendere tutto le telecamere poste su una seconda auto che seguiva il giovane.
Fatto sta che improvvisamente, senza alcun apparente motivo, uno degli agenti presenti, Jason Van Dyke, ha fatto fuoco, a bruciapelo, senza lasciare scampo al giovane diciassettenne, stramazzato in terra. E, nonostante tutto, viene ancora bersagliato dai colpi.
