Live Version by Bruce Springsteen
During The River Tour, Bruce Springsteen used the chorus and the three verses (verse 1, verse 2, and verse 3 below) from the original Creedence Clearwater Revival version, and he added two or three more verses that he wrote.
The lyrics "Well last night they pulled him out of his house / And shot him in the street" would later be used in THEY KILLED HIM IN THE STREET ("They took him from his house and killed him in the street") and Bells of San Salvador ("Well they took him from his house / killed him in the street").
RUN THROUGH THE JUNGLE was performed at least 3 times during The River Tour (138 dates, October 1980 to September 1981). On this tour, the song was the show opener and was played in a rearranged slower version extended with two or three Springsteen-penned verses.

Scopro sul sempre ottimo Mudcat Café che il Boss potrebbe qui aver tratto ispirazione da una ballata ottocentesca inglese intitolata proprio Jack of All Trades e della quale esistono numerose versioni con localizzazioni diverse: Londra, Dublino, Birmingham, Nottingham, ecc…
Una versione che vorrei qui proporre è quella scritta da John Hasted (1921-2002, un fisico atomico con la passione per le folksong) e incisa da Ewan MacColl con The Critics Group nel loro disco del 1967 intitolato “Sweet Thames Flow Softly”. Poi anche da Leon Rosselson e Roy Bailey in “Songs of Life from a Dying British Empire” del 1981. La melodia è quella di una canzone di strada irlandese, “Dublin Jack of All Trades”, per l’appunto.

Bell'articolo ma caduta rovinosa ed inaspettata nel finale. Cos'è questa storia che non amiamo Dancin in the dark? Forse sarebbe meglio parlare al singolare ;) non la amano solo i "ragazzini che ai concerti vogliono anche ballare". Se si legge il testo si ha uno dei tanti esempi della scrittura di Bruce, un vissuto doloroso ma cantato con potenza, celebrazione e anche gioia. Esattamente come Born in the USA.

Da notare come la versione di Pete Seeger, nonostante Jesse James non fosse certo uno stinco di santo, e anche combattesse per i confederati, diventando di fatto un sabotatore dei treni unionisti, ne faccia una sorta di moderno Robin Hood

The Wall
”The Wall” is something I’d played on stage a few times and remains very close to my heart. The title and idea were Joe Grushecky’s, then the song appeared after Patti and I made a visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington. It was inspired by my memories of Walter Cichon. Walter was one of the great early Jersey Shore rockers, who along with his brother Ray (one of my early guitar mentors) led the ”Motifs”. The Motifs were a local rock band who were always a head above everybody else. Raw, sexy and rebellious, they were the heroes you aspired to be. But these were heroes you could touch, speak to, and go to with your musical inquiries. Cool, but always accessible, they were an inspiration to me, and many young working musicians in 1960′s central New Jersey. Though my character in “The Wall” is a Marine, Walter was actually in the Army, A Company, 3rd Battalion, 8th Infantry.... (continua)

He was a quiet, soft-spoken guy who wore dark clothes and pointy-toe boots, and had shoulder-length hair before it was in fashion.
He liked listening to The Animals, The Kinks and The Rolling Stones, but never tried to be a guitar god. Instead, the only instrument he really played was a tambourine. When he got up on stage and began to sing, people saw something special in Walter Cichon.
"He wasn't just a singer, he was a front man. He was a character, a personality," said "Stormin' "Norman Seldin. "This guy had a magnetism about him." Cichon was the lead singer for The Motifs, the Shore-area's first "hot" rock 'n' roll band. His older brother, Raymond, was the lead guitar player, and Seldin was the group's teen-age manager.

Springsteen's manager Jon Landau wasn't a fan of the project (the 1994 album), and recommended shelving it and focusing more on a "career overview"; this lead to the Greatest Hits sessions with the E Street Band in early 1995.
Springsteen called the band in early January 1995, and they assembled for the recording sessions on 09 Jan 1995 at the Hit Factory in New York City, NY. This was their first studio reunion in 11 years (since the Born In The USA sessions) and their first ever with Nils Lofgren. HIGH HOPES was among the songs recorded during these sessions. Being a cover, it is not surprising that the song was not included on the Greatest Hits album.

A quel periodo risale questa canzone che fu però pubblicata solo nel 1988 come B-side del singolo "One Step Up" dall'album Tunnel of Love (e poi nella raccolta "Tracks" del 1998).

Il treno come metafora di liberazione percorre tutta la musica americana, specialmente la musica nera. Springsteen qui gioca con i riferimenti: People Get Ready, citata apertamente alla fine del brano ma anche This Train (Bound for Glory).
Ma, come scrive Alessandro Portelli, Springsteen rovescia il gospel amato da Guthrie e da Big Bill Broonzy. Loro dicevano: “questo treno non porta giocatori d’azzardo, non porta puttane…” E lui invece: “questo treno porta puttane, porta giocatori, porta vincitori e perdenti”. Sul treno di Bruce c’è posto per tutti. Questa è la sua gente, our own.
Ma dove porta questo treno, dove per salire si prende quel che si può portare e si lascia il resto, cos'è questa terra di speranza e di sogno se non una terra finalmente libera, dove suonano le campane della libertà?
Non a caso, nel concerto a Ginevra del 3 luglio 2013 Land of Hope And Dreams è stata dedicata a Nelson Mandela.
