Vassilis Tsitsanis wrote – as most people suggest – the song a little after the Greek civil war in 1948. Tsitsanis did not give any details about the incident that inspired this song, but later on, when his biography was published, there was a reference to the way this song was born.
According to Tsitsanis himself, he witnessed an incident in Thessaloniki, while Greece was occupied by the German army in World War 2: three men went to a wall and wrote with paint “Death to Fascism – Freedom”. But before they finished, German soldiers appeared and killed them on the spot. Blood was everywhere…
Tsitsanis with his 2 friends left the area quickly to save their lives. Since then, he was trying to put to words what happened that day.
One Sunday, while coming back from Salamina, he heard someone saying “what a day, it breaks your heart”. That gave an inspiration to Tsitsanis, who took a small... (continua)

Solidarity Forever
This well-known tune, originally a folk hymn, has given birth to numerous songs of different nature. These include an early 19th century hymn titled »Canaan's Happy Shore«, an abolitionist song titled »John Brown's Body«, a famous marching song from the American Civil War titled the »Battle Hymn of the Republic«, and, finally, this popular labor union anthem written by Ralph Chaplin for the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW).
Also in Finland, there are different versions of the song, including one of »Solidarity Forever«, in Finnish »Solidaarisuutta aina«. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find its complete lyrics, but below is the refrain in Finnish.
Another Finnish version of the song is titled »Kalle-Kustaan muori«, in English »Kalle-Kustaa's Mother«. This is interesting, because Kalle-Kustaa could refer to two Swedish kings, Carl X Gustav (1654 - 1660) and the present king Carl... (continua)

LA BARONESSA DI CARINI: L'amaro caso, in versi e strofe
di Mimmo Mòllica.
In questa appassionata filastrocca, Mimmo Mòllica mette in versi, per la prima volta in lingua italiana, il triste caso della Signora di Carini, vicenda divenuta di dominio pubblico solo in tempi moderni. Pietro La Grua Talamanca, Barone di Carini, il 4 dicembre 1563, dava la morte alla figlia Caterina, con le proprie mani e nel suo stesso Castello di Carini, credendola "rea di fallo venereo avuto con uno di Casa Vernagallo": è «il triste Caso della figlia di Carini».
Caterina venne uccisa dal suo stesso padre e la Giustizia non ardì proferir verbo. Vincenzo Vernagallo, suo segreto spasimante, dovette nascondersi in un convento fuori dall’Isola. Il Vernagallo scampò alla morte nascosto in un quartiere di Palermo ma, poi, pentito si consacrò a Dio. Certo non rimase in Sicilia, dove il feroce Pietro Talamanca La... (continua)
