La centrale nucleare di Shoreham costò 6 miliardi di dollari e non entrò mai in funzione. Abbandonata nel 1989, si spesero oltre 200 milioni dollari per mettere l’impianto in sicurezza. Nel 2005 è stato convertito per la produzione di energia elettrica attraverso turbine a gas.

“Written at the end of the 1984/85 Miners' Strike in the UK for the Lothian Victimised Miners, most of whom were friends of mine, who lost their jobs as a result of their part in the strike. Davie Hamilton (now an MP) was the Chair of the Lothian Miner's Central Strike Committee - he spent 3 months in Saughton Prison after being arrested while trying to get medical assistance for an injured picket. He also lost his job.
Malcolm Pitt was the Area president of the Kent National Union of Mineworkers and was also arrested and imprisoned on a trivial charge.
At the time of the strike Arthur Scargill was the National President of the NUM, Peter Heathfield was General Secretary, and Mick McGahey was National Vice-President and Scottish Area President.

A Lengede, in Bassa Sassonia, nel 1963 una miniera fu allagata dall’acqua proveniente da lacuni laghi artificiali che la sovrastavano (!!!). 130 minatori rimasero intrappolati. 29 di loro morirono. Quando, dopo alcune settimane, le gallerie furono rimesse in sicurezza e si poterono raggiungere i corpi, i soccorritori scoprirono che quegli uomini, nel tentativo di aprirsi una via di salvezza, avevano scavato per 14 giorni prima di soccombere… Un corpo non fu mai neppure trovato.

Canzone rebetica ormai quasi proverbiale, che non richiede spiegazioni; ma si presta ancora a molte dediche. La lingua è vicina a un argot. Amàn-amàn è un intercalare ritmico tipico nella canzone "manghika", di origine anatolica. I locali dove si cantavano simili canzoni, con accompagnamento di narghilé per l' hashish, venivano infatti detti "Caffé Amàn". La gente per bene non doveva frequentarli.

Il vero protagonista di questa canzone è chi la canta, il rapper, musicista e songwriter americano – ma trapiantato a Londra - Alexander Akiloe Philip Modiano, aka Natty.
Nel 2005 a Natty capitò di assistere all’eplosione del bus numero 17758, sventrato in uno degli attentati coordinati che scossero Londra il 7 luglio di quell’anno, quando alcuni terroristi suicidi – cittadini britannici di religione islamica – si fecere esplodere nella rete di trasporto pubblico londinese causando la morte di 56 persone ed il ferimento di svariate centinaia.
Due settimane dopo, allo sfortunato Natty toccò pure di assistere alla morte di Jean Charles de Menezes, un giovane brasiliano che la polizia londinese abbattè come un cane nella metropolitana avendolo scambiato per un terrorista…

Come Dreadful Memories, un’altra canzone che Aunt Molly Jackson compose durante uno dei tanti scioperi ‎che i minatori di Harlan County, Kentucky, condussero nel corso degli anni 30, culminati il 5 ‎maggio 1931 nella cosiddetta “Battle of Evarts” quando tre minatori rimasero uccisi negli scontri tra ‎scioperanti, crumiri e vigilantes della compagnia mineraria. Il governatore fu costretto a mandare la ‎guardia nazionale a ristabilire l’ordine e da quel momento Harlan fu nota come “Bloody Harlan ‎County”. Era nota con questo nomignolo ancora negli anni 70, quando le lotte sindacali si ‎rinfocolarono e si fecero di nuovo molto violente… ‎

La canzone è stata prodotta quando l'autore è stato ispirato dagli eventi del 13 dicembre 2009, quando il Cavaliere fu colpito da una chiesa volante (anche in Vaticano è arrivata la tecnologia). Ha narrato l'evento sulla musica della bellissima "Le mauvais sujet repenti" di Georges Brassens.

Il diciannovenne Bill Brakefield disertò nel 1968 ma, invece di provare a scappare in Canada, decise di rendere pubblica la sua decisione. Per qualche giorno riuscì ad evitare l’arresto rifugiandosi nel City College di New York, ma il 7 novembre la polizia fece irruzione, prese Bill e i commilitoni che avevano condiviso la sua lotta e li consegnò alle autorità militari.

All’epoca le corti marziali lavoravano senza sosta: nel 1969 furono celebrati quasi 80.000 processi per diserzione, con il 94% di condanne! E nelle prigioni militari i soldati pacifisti o, comunque, non disposti ad andare a farsi ammazzare o ad uccidere in Vietnam non se la passavano bene…

"Da quando, oltre 30 anni fa, ho deciso di essere cantastorie, ho sempre scritto e cantato pubblicamente contro la mafia. Ricordo che, agli inizi degli anni '80, volevo incidere un disco di cui è rimasto solo il titolo: Passando per Comiso: da Garibaldi a Pio La Torre.
Col tempo ha vinto la mia proverbiale pigrizia per cui, pur continuando a cantare contro la mafia, ho tralasciato il progetto.
