Cavallo Pazzo (in inglese Crazy Horse) è stato un celebre capo e guerriero della tribù dei Lakota Oglala, vissuto nel XIX secolo. Nato intorno al 1840, è ricordato per il suo coraggio, la sua leadership e la sua determinazione nel difendere la cultura e le terre del suo popolo contro l’espansione degli Stati Uniti. Partecipò a importanti battaglie, tra cui la famosa Battaglia di Little Bighorn del 1876, in cui le forze indigene sconfissero il generale Custer. Cavallo Pazzo è considerato un simbolo della resistenza dei nativi americani e un eroe della loro storia. Morì nel 1877, in circostanze controverse, dopo essersi arreso alle autorità statunitensi.

The hangings at Battleford refers to the hanging on November 27, 1885, of eight Indigenous men for murders committed in the First Nations uprising that occurred at the time of the North-West Rebellion. The executed men were found guilty of murder in the Frog Lake Massacre and in the Looting of Battleford. These murders took place outside the military combat that took place during the North-West Rebellion.
The court trials were presided over by magistrate Charles Rouleau. The trials and hangings followed the Looting of Battleford, where the judge himself suffered material loss.
Prior to the rebellion the Canadian government's actions in the District of Saskatchewan resulted in starvation, disease, and death among the Indigenous peoples of the area. Traditional means of self-support, such as buffalo disappeared with the sale of lands.
At both Frog Lake and Battleford, some people took up arms against the wishes of their leaders. Some were sentenced to prison terms or death. Others fled to the United States.

E noi, siamo solo la sua pelle. Però questo "noi" include tutto ciò che vive, anche il vento, le acque. E tutto questo crea un sentiero di memoria. ' The impact of settler colonialism is still evident in America today, widely impacting Indigenous communities across the country. On the Rosebud Reservation alone, Waln says, poverty is rampant. Unemployment levels are over 80%, and violence and addiction have become a problem that desperately needs solving.
To continue experiencing the consequences of colonialism compounds the trauma experienced by both the old and new generations, Waln says.

Lakota rapper and activist Frank Waln wrote this scathing satire of the song “What Made The Red Man Red?” from Disney’s 1953 film Peter Pan to criticize its broadly stereotypical portrayal of Native American tribes. Using audio samples from the original song, he lambasts the United States for its legacy of colonialism and genocide in what was originally Native territory as well as Hollywood’s whitewashing of the harsh history of U.S.-Native relationships.
The song was first released on Dec. 29, 2015, on KOYA FM, the local radio station for the Sicangu Oyate (Oyate is the Lakota word for nation). Place and date are significant: on that December day of 1890, about 300 Lakota were slaughtered by the US 7th Cavalry in what remains sadly known as the Wounded Knee Massacre.... (continua)

Many of Waln's songs tackle Native American social issues. In this particular song, introduced and concluded by spoken words by John Trudell, he put's the social issues in the larger perspective of a perpetuation of the historical "Indian Wars" in a still lasting "white war" against the identities, ways of life of the native people. As oppression has many ways, it needs a lot on both side to find a way out. Resistance on one side and apologies on the other won't do it alone. It needs deconstruction of the minds and decolonization of the memories. And the key is sovereignty. And the misunderstandings about it.

Chiude il disco, l’inedito “Giorni senza memoria” in cui spicca la partecipazione di Massimo Zamboni alla chitarra elettrica e nel cui testo si susseguono le immagini di Hiroshima e Nagasaki dopo la bomba atomica, lo sterminio degli armeni, le repressioni dei khmer rossi in Cambogia e l’occupazione della Palestina da parte degli israeliani. Sebbene di breve durata, “Cuore Meridiano” è un disco di bruciante attualità, un raggio di luce e di bellezza che fende questi giorni bui in cui lo spettro della guerra si aggira con insistenza nel mondo.

Talvolta le notizie si accavallano, sembrando quasi contraddirsi.
E’ questo, in questi giorni almeno, il caso dei prigionieri politici Mapuche rinchiusi nelle carceri cilene e da mesi in huelga de hambre.
Stando alle fonti ufficiali (diciamo “istituzionali”) almeno due di loro avrebbero appeno sospeso la protesta dopo quasi 80 giorni.
Comunque sia, il 9 febbraio la Corte di Appello di Concepcion avrebbe annullato la sentenza a circa 15 anni di carcere contro due dirigenti della Coordinadora Arauco Malleco (Héctor Llaitul - figlio del principale leader della CAM - e Ramón Llanquileo) e altri comuneros (Ricardo Reinao, Nicolás Alcaman e Esteban Henríquez).
Osservo che tra gli scioperanti della fame ne troviamo almeno altri due con il cognome llaitul, Ernesto e Bastian.
