Malaika was conceived [by Adam Salim] while he was in Nairobi,Kenya around 1945,which explains how the song crossed borders and why it was first recorded by a Kenyan artist. It is widely believed that Salim had a long time girlfriend named Halima Ramadhan Maruwa,a chaga girl(kilimanjaro largest ethnic group). The love Salim had for the beautiful Halima couldn’t be described in words even by most eloquent of writers so it’s futile even trying to do so,Salim tried to make ends meet with the little left overs of opportunities afforded to the natives by the British colonial system but still wasn’t able to earn enough to please Halima and her parents
Salim’s hustle took him to Nairobi, and it’s believed that during his time there that he received the heartbreaking news that Halima had been maried off to an Asian tajir(wealthy Asian).Asians in the British protectorates in East Africa were considered as second class citizens from the British while native blacks were the third class(lowest rung in the ladder)this allowed the Asian population to own shops and engage in profitable businesses that Africans were not allowed to.
While it is not clear when the marriage happened and whether Halima was in on it from the very beginning with her parents, the effects of it to Salim were crystal clear. He became withdrawn and submerged in an abyss of hopelessness, there he was in a foreign country with almost little or no friends at all to comfort him,so he turned to the only thing that keeps dead hearts alive, music
The only silver lining that I take from this horrible affair is the conception of Malaika,a love song like no other that Adam Salim poured his heart into, for some reason Adam never really got to record the song, perhaps due to limited resources or lack of will.

Adam Salim & Trio [played]at many clubs in Kenya & Tanganyika singing about 15 other songs by Adam. In 1959, the young Fadhili Williams of Nairobi who had played mandolin briefly with Adam & Trio recorded Malaika at the now deffunct Columbia east african Music Co. Adam got SIXTY shillings for that!!! Adam was later involved in a bad accident, was hospitalised for 3 yrs in Nairobi, moved to Moshi where his parents then lived. Laterer he worked for 25 yrs as a bicycle fundi at the Kilombero Sugar Factory in Morogoro and moved back to Moshi with his 2nd wife & kids.
In 1986, the SUNDAY NEWS of Dsm initiated an extensive investigation into this Malaika thing after the widow of the Kenyan artist Frank Charo claimed that her husband was the composer of Malaika. Of course Fadhili denied it oficially at a concert at the Kilimanjaro Hotel in Dar in May 86. This affair was publicised much in the EA media in 86 with pictures of Adam and Halima & Halima's children & grandchildren.Fadhili won the fight and has the total copyright - he's been unable to produce his angel though!
Halima & many others have testified that Adam Salim wrote Malaika for her. I was told this way back in 1967 by my mjomba Ayoub Ahmed Ayoub Alarakhia Rangooni alias Ustad Mitu who had met Adam & Trio first in 1948.

Nota testuale

1. Harry Belafonte & Miriam Makeba – Album : An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba [1965]
2. Miriam Makeba – Album : Malaika [1979]
3. Fadhili William – Album : Various Top Hits From Kenya [N.A.]

Origine de la chanson

Malaika

MALAIKA

Malaika sana kaunein on kielen.
Malaika, muistot valtaa taas mielen.
Kun mä rannalle kerran saavuin kaukaisen maan,
tyttö seisoi siellä paikallaan
ja kustui hiljaa: Malaika.
Mitä muuta siihen vastaiskaan,
mä sanoin myöskin: Malaika.

Malaika sana kaunein on kielen.
Malaika, muistot valtaa taas mielen.
Kun mä rannalla kerran viivyin kaukaisen maan,
tyttö sanoi mulle teltassaan
vain aivan hiljaa: Malaika.
Mitä muuta siihen vastaiskaan,
mä sanoin myöskin: Malaika.

Malaika sana kaunein on kielen.
Malaika, muistot valtaa taas mielen.
Kun mä rannalta kerran lähdin kaukaisen maan,
tuuli yksin mua saattoi vaan
ja kuiski hiljaa: Malaika.
Mitä muuta siihen vastaiskaan,
mä sanoin myöskin: Malaika.
