Parole e musica di Dan Kennedy (non ho purtroppo notizie circa l’autore))
Una canzone scritta appositamente per The World Is My Country, progetto inglese nato per celebrare gli obiettori di coscienza della Grande Guerra.
Nel brano viene citata Emmeline Goulden Pankhurst, leader del movimento suffragista femminile britannico, che però fu anche un’ardente anti-comunista e anti-tedesca, tanto da dichiarare nel 1914 che la causa suffragista era sospesa per non intralciaree lo sforzo bellico...
James Keir Hardie, anche lui citato, fu invece un leader socialista, fondatore del Labour Party in Scozia. Al contrario della Pankhurst, Keir Hardie fu un fiero oppositore alla Grande Guerra, tanto da cercare di organizzare uno sciopero generale per mostrare la contrarietà dei lavoratori all’ennesima guerra voluta dai ricchi e dai potenti. Il suo sforzo non ebbe però successo, perchè all’epoca il pacifismo era del tutto minoritario. A guerra cominciata Keir Hardie continuò a tuonare il suo “no!” in tanti comizi, spesso subissati dalle urla e dai fischi degli interventisti. L’impegno profuso da Keir Hardie contro la guerra lo portò alla tomba nel 1915, restando egli colpito da alcuni gravi infarti.
