The Take Off and Landing of Everything
Elbow-Take-Off-Landing-Everything

Guy Garvey spent time in New York recently, but Elbow’s latest album remains anchored in the doughty verities of North-west England, notwithstanding the American influence on the lyrics to “Fly Boy Blue/Lunette” and “New York Morning”. Despite being written by different combinations of the line-up, it’s possibly their most homogenous album, most songs riding gentle pulses of percussion, organ and piano, guitars circling the action. At times, there are echoes of Krautrock and Terry Riley. Garvey remains a master of character, as with the roaring boys in “My Sad Captains”, and while several songs dissect his own relationships, his tribute to asylum-seekers in “The Blanket of Night” displays a noble empathy.
Paper cup of a boat
Heaving chest of the sea
Carry both of us
Carry her, carry me
From the place we were born
To the land of the free
Carry both of us
Carry her, carry me

The ocean
That bares us from our home
Could save us
Or take us for its own
The danger
That life should lead us here
My angel
Could I have steered us clear?

Gone the light from her eyes
With the lives that we made
Just the two of us
In the night on the waves
Moving silent her lips
By the moon's only light
Sewing silver prayers
In the blanket of night

The ocean
That bares us from our home
Could save us
Or take us for its own
The danger
That life should lead us here
My angel
Could I have steered us clear?

Paper cup of a boat
Heaving chest of the sea
Carry both of us
Oh, swallow her, swallow me

Elbow close their The Take Off and Landing of Everything album with this ballad about the major UK political parties' attitude to immigrants. Guy Garvey told Mojo magazine: "It's about a couple at sea, refugees escaping a bad situation. When even Labour is campaigning on immigration trying to make the country's ills the fault of such people... well, nothing's ever made me so angry. I wrote it in 20 minutes, which tells me it came from the gut."
The song depicts a refugee husband and wife in a boat at night on a rough sea. "That was to illustrate that, while both political parties are blaming the country's problems on immigrants, there are people who are dying to get into the country," Garvey told Uncut magazine. "It's so irresponsible to blame immigrants for our problems, those politicians should be ashamed of themselves."
