This song gives an overview of crucial points in Scotland’s history from the days of King Robert the Bruce's victorious exploits at the battle of Bannockburn when his "Common Army" in 1314 gained freedom and independence for the Scottish people against all odds from the yoke of English tyranny.
Almost 400 hundred years later in 1707 the Scots lost that independence to England through the greed of many Scottish nobles who sold for private profit against their country men’s wishes their liberty to create a union of parliaments based in London representing the United Kingdom.
300 years later Scotland succeeded in achieving a devolved parliament and in 2007 elections a successful SNP government enhanced the possibility of moving towards a referendum on independence allowing the historic quest of Scots for self-determination to be fulfilled. This song optimistically looks forward to that celebration.
The tangle o' the Isles
Lowland and borders
Wild Hielin men wi' style
Celtic world order
On the field of Bannockburn
Stood freedom's army…

You can take me home – to Caledonia
That's where I belong
Among the kinfolk -of Bonnie Scotland
Standing by her freedom songs.

Where you know that
People they matter
Lords we don't flatter
And Uisge Beatha makes us want to smile
Oh yes it does.

Three hundred years ago
Oh slavery days !
Politicians sold our souls
For vulgar ways
Sold away our liberty
Sold away freedom...

You can take me home – to Caledonia
That's where I belong
Among the kinfolk of Bonnie Scotland
Standing by her freedom songs.

Where you know that
People they matter
Lords we don't flatter
And Uisge Beatha makes us want to smile
Oh yes.

Come Independence day
Oh celebration
Come Scotia's people be
A freedom nation
Free as the sky above
Free as the ocean...

You can take me home – to Caledonia
That's where I belong
Among the kinfolk –of Bonnie Scotland
Standing by her freedom song

Now I said
you can take me home – to Caledonia
That's where I belong
Among the kinfolk of Bonnie Scotland
Standing by her freedom songs
Where I'm dancing
Dancing with brothers and sisters
Singing
Singing sweet songs of freedom
In sweet harmony
Oh Caledonia for me
Where I'm dancing
Dancing with my brothers and sisters
Singing
Singing sweet songs of freedom.
