Anna Marly [1917-2006]

On m'a dit résigne toi
Mais je n'ai pas pu
Et j'ai repris mon arme.

Personne ne m'a demandé
D'où je viens et où je vais
Vous qui le savez
Effacez mon passage.

J'ai changé cent fois de nom
J'ai perdu femme et enfants
Mais j'ai tant d'amis
Et j'ai la France entière.

Un vieil homme dans un grenier
Pour la nuit nous a cachés
Les Allemands l'ont pris
Il est mort sans surprise.

Hier encore nous étions trois
Il ne reste plus que moi
Et je tourne en rond
Dans la prison des frontières.

Le vent souffle sur les tombes
La liberté reviendra
On nous oubliera
Nous rentrerons dans l'ombre.

English version by Hy Zaret

SONG OF THE FRENCH PARTISAN

No one asks me where I'm going
No one asks me what I'm doing;
Comarades, you who know
Oh, you must keep my secret.

I have changed my name so often,
And I've lost my wife and children
but I have many friends;
For all France is with me

An old woman gave us shelter,
Kept us hidden in the garret,
Then the Germans came;
She died without a whisper.

There were three of us this morning
I'm the only one this evening
but I wander on;
the frontiers are my prison.

Oh, the wind, the wind is blowing,
Through the graves the wind is blowing,
Freedom soon will come;
Then we'll come from the shadow.

La versione cantata da Joan Baez dall'album "Come From The Shadows".

[RV]

come from the shadows
For Melina Mercouri and the many thousands suffering under and fighting against the current Greek dictatorship
THE PARTISAN

They poured across the borders
We were cautioned to surrender
This I could not do
Into the hills I vanished

No one ever asks me
Who I am or where I'm going
But those of you who know
You cover up my footprints

I have changed my name so often
I have lost my wife and children
But I have many friends
And some of them are with me

An old woman gave us shelter
Kept us hidden in a garrett
And then the soldiers came
She died without a whisper

There were three of us this morning
And I'm the only one this ev'ning
Still I must go on
Frontiers are my prison

Oh the winds, the winds are blowing
Thru the graves the winds are blowing
Freedom soon will come!
Then we'll come from the shadow.

LAMENTO DEL PARTIGIANO

I tedeschi erano da me
Mi hanno detto "Consegnati"
Ma non ho potuto farlo
E ho ripreso il mio fucile.

Nessuno mi ha domandato
Da dove vengo e dove vado
Voi che sapete
Cancellate le tracce del mio passaggio

Ho cambiato nome cento volte
Ho perduto moglie e figli
Ma ho tanti amici
Ed ho la Francia intera.

Un vecchio in un granaio
ci ha nascosti per la notte
I tedeschi l'hanno preso
è morto senza sorprendersi

Ieri ancora eravamo tre
Non resto che io
E giro in tondo
Nella prigione delle frontiere

Il vento soffia sulle tombe
La libertà tornerà
Saremo dimenticati
Rientreremo nell'ombra.

PARTISANENKLAGELIED

Die Deutschen waren bei mir,
« Ergib dich ! », sagten sie mir
es aber könnt’ ich nicht tun
und gegriffen hab’ ich zu meinem Gewehr

Gefragt hat niemand mir
woher ich komme, wohin ich gehe
Ihr aber, die alles wißt,
löscht meine Spuren aus!

Hundertmal hab’ ich verändert
meinen Name, und Frau und Kinder
habe ich verlorn,
ganz Frankreich steht aber bei mir !

Ein Greis hat uns versteckt
in ‘nem Schober für die Nacht
die Deutscher habn ihn genommen
gestorben ist er ohne Überraschung

Gestern waren wir noch drei
jetzt bin ich ganz allein,
und ich wandre noch,
mir sind Grenzen wie ein Gefängnis

Der Wind bläst über die Gräber
die Freiheit wird zurückkommen
uns wird man vergessn
nochmals in den Schatten.

Versione greca di Gian Piero Testa

Πως σε λένε κι από που;

LAMENTO DEL PARTISANO

Los alemanes fueron a mi casa
me han dicho resígnate
Pero no he podido
y he retomado mi arma.

Nadie me ha preguntado
de dónde vengo y a dónde voy
Vosotros que lo sabéis
borrar mi paso.

He cambiado cien veces de nombre
he perdido mujer e hijos
pero tengo muchos amigos
y tengo toda Francia.

Dumane sicchera u to sangue sott' a le so botte
Cantate o'fratelli chi ci sente a liberta sta notte

Russian version by Arkadiy Kots Band has just appeared, translated by Kirill Medvedev

Hello, I'm writing because I noticed that the greek lyrics on Joan Baez's version of this song are not the ones actually heard on the song. If you listen to it for example on this video you'll notice that the lyrics of the greek verse are:

(anemi, anemi sfirizoun
stous tafous anemi sfirizoun
erhete i lefteria
ki emeis mazi ap ta skotadia)

The translation is actually the same but as you can see it's different from the one mentioned on the page.
I hope this helps
Congratulations for all the work you've done!
Peace!

Rena

Dear Irena, thank you for the correct version of the Greek verse included in Joan Baez's version. As a matter of fact, the version was contributed to our website several years ago by an unknown person and has never been checked out in due form. So, your contribution proves really invaluable. As you can see, the correct verse has been integrated into the lyrics. Thank you again, παρακαλούμε πολύ!

CCG/AWS Staff - 2/11/2015 - 17:24

Actually the unknown person was me. I copied the Greek lyrics from the original LP. But it might well be that the printed lyrics are different from the lines heard in the song.

Lorenzo - 2/11/2015 - 17:28

As a matter of fact, this is far from being a unique case. Lyrics or verses in unusual languages are quite often misunderstood or incorrect. Anyway, the Greek of the previous version was correct and, so, the hypothesis made by Lorenzo may well be right.

Riccardo Venturi - 2/11/2015 - 17:39

here is a picture of the booklet of Joan Baez's "Come From The Shadows" LP:

Lorenzo - 2/11/2015 - 18:49

I see, I see. The Greek verse as printed there appears to be a word-for-word translation of the last English verse, but the spelling is awfully incorrect (no "final sigma", no written accents, "αη" for "απ' " etc). The translation may be correct but has clearly been written down by someone who didn't know a single word of Greek. Amen.
