Ignorance (Library)

In my room I have a shrine to ignorance. It is by far your favourite of all my shrines, and it always has been. In fact, it was much less impressive before you arrived, for you were the one who adorned it with its brightly coloured fuzzy whirlygigs that tickle the palms of those who touch them, and its frilly lacy doppelwingers that whirr with delight when spun about on their axes. I remember how proud you were of your work when it was completed, and, in spite of myself, I was drawn to it as well. You now love this shrine so much that you invite all of your friends to come and see it too, and they, in turn, invite their friends, and I quickly realize that I should charge an entrance fee to see it, and an extra fee to caress the whirlygigs, and another to spin the doppelwingers. It has... (continuer)

Memory (the Abysm in the Basement)

You are here now, demanding to see my shrine to memory, but it seems that I have somehow misplaced it. It was a multi-coloured shrine, and when it caught the light in a certain way, power would radiate from it, melting all your ice-laden lies enveloping my brain, exposing images and facts that beckoned the Devourer. I am not sure how it is possible that I could have misplaced it. Someone must have stolen it from me. I look for it, growing increasingly frustrated under your mocking gaze, but as time passes, I realize that it is not mockery, just satisfaction, and as more time passes, pity. And so I stop looking, and you seem content to let the question and me fall into darkness. Just then, the thinnest beam of light penetrates the clouds and pierces the window, shooting directly into the... (continuer)

Despair (Former Workshop)

In my room I have a shrine to despair. Its ornate arms haunt the dark corners, the tendrils snaking out upon the walls and up to the ceiling, where they take root and hang down, creating a canopy for refuge and for hiding. You often feign interest in it, but whenever I try to explain the significance of the ancient runes carved upon it, your eyes glaze over and I can tell that you are no longer listening. You never offer to help me take it out of the room, but to be fair, I never ask. And so it just sits there, demanding an offering which I am all too willing to prepare by reaching out into the world and grabbing ahold of a piece of its decaying gossamer strands to place upon the shrine, still wriggling with life but quickly moldering into black limp sludge that you immediately absorb,... Compassion (the Planes)

In my room, I have a shrine to compassion. It has seen better days, and I grow tired of looking at it and being reminded of all it represents, so I decide to get rid of it. And so I heft it upon my shoulders (for it is quite light, you see) and carry it to my neighbours to the south to offer as a gift, enjoying the warm caress of the sun upon my face. But they notice how light it is and tell me that it is an insult to offer them something that carries so little weight, slamming the door in my face. And so I heft it once more onto my shoulders, with a little more difficulty this time as it has grown heavier, and I carry it to my neighbours to the east to offer it as a gift, the sun at its height forcing out the tiniest droplet of sweat from my brow. But they look me up and down, and before... (continuer)

Complicity (Toolshed)

You have a shrine to complicity but it is far too uncomfortable to keep in your room, so it sits out back behind the rusted rattly old tool shed. Long ago, you laid a blanket atop it, the same blanket you cowered under in your more innocent days as you sought protection from the evils in the world, its purpose now corrupted by your “adult” needs. And so the shrine sits there in the dank corner topped by this heavy faded green blanket that perfectly blends in with the bushes that surround it. Over time, the blanket has amassed layers of scum and dirt, and it desperately needs cleansing, but no one has ever volunteered to do it, for that might reveal things that are best ignored, things much too horrible for the untrained eye. The jagged edges of the shrine do pierce through the blanket in... (continuer)

I have a shrine in my room to amorphous unsettled anger. Its colours shift from a dull seething orange to a bright nuclear red depending on how the light shines upon it. Since you will not come to visit anymore, I will attempt to describe it to you, even though that is difficult to do because its shape is continuously changing. At one point the top looked like the upper reaches of a mushroom cloud while the bottom looked like a sharp-toothed grin. But one day as I watched, mesmerized by the darkness of its maw, a lump began to form between the teeth, growing and mutating in unnatural ways, and slowly the head of a newborn baby became visible, and it became clear that the mouth was the Devourer. And as the colours shifted to a red deeper than the depths of the sun, I felt the Devourer reach... (continuer)

Truth (Workshop)

In my room I have a shrine to the truth. It is difficult to find things to place upon it these days, so most of the shrine consists of relics of the past. There is a stack of polaroids – a collection of memories that I have been recording since I was a child. The oldest ones tend to stay on the top because they are the ones that I want to sift through the most – the days when the truth seemed possible, achievable. Something that could actually be attained and grabbed and held on to and examined. But I often find myself looking at these images and not recognizing the people in them – I would say they were not real but the weight of them in my hand, the resistance of the paper as I try to rip them, crush them, tells me otherwise. There is also a boxtop lid on the shrine, where I keep... (continuer)

Ruth Mundy is a New Zealand based singer songwriter who writes about social and political issues which impact the world, including climate change.

She collaborated with Moz ( Mostafa Azimitabar), a Kurdish political prisoner who has been stuck in the limbo of offshore detention in PNG for five years due to Australian government policyon this track. My hope is to thank her in person for her beautiful vocals one day.

Down Rodeo

Down Rodeo
(1996)
Album: Evil Empire

Rodeo Drive è la strada dello shopping di Beverly Hills,

“Down Rodeo” was a promotional single by American rock band Rage Against the Machine. The song was intended as the third single from their Evil Empire album, although a domestic single was never released.

The song addresses social inequality between the rich and poor of America, and the simmering class warfare that existed in the band’s home city of Los Angeles following the 1992 Los Angeles Riots. “Down Rodeo” was written just three years after six days of riots were sparked by police violence against minorities in the city. The full lyric must be put into context of the time period and the beating of Rodney King to be understood: “So now I’m rollin' down Rodeo with a shotgun, These people ain’t seen a brown skin man, Since their grandparents bought one”

A sua volta l’antisionismo viene equiparato tout court all’antisemitismo. Scatta a questo punto il senso di colpa e l’autocensura della comunità o del singolo malcapitato raggiunti dall’epiteto antisemita:... (continuer)
