Gli Europall in questo pezzo immaginano di essere un ragazzo che sta sotto i bombardamenti di una qualsiasi guerra, mettendo in risalto la mano dell'uomo cio che "umanamente" riesce a rendere così "disumano". Una bella canzone.

L'assassinio dell'attivista per i diritti civili Medgar Evers, avvenuto il 12 giugno 1963 per mano di Morgan De La Beckwith, membro del Ku Klux Klan, provocò un'ondata di indignazione in tutti gli Stati Uniti; diverse canzoni furono scritte su quel tragico episodio. Tra queste, Only A Pawn In Their Game di Bob Dylan (alla quale si rimanda per una trattazione completa sulla vita e sull'assassinio di Evers). Un'altra celebre canzone fu scritta da Phil Ochs e Bob Gibson, che originariamente la intitolarono "Ballad Of Medgar Evers"; ma già nel primo album in studio di Ochs, "All The News That's Fit To Sing", la canzone reca il titolo di "Too Many Martyrs". "As long as they don't move next door." The title is inspired by Phil Ochs. Once considered a rival of Bob Dylan, Ochs wrote topical songs containing a mixture of satire and bile. Most of his venom was saved for the likes of Orval Faubus and Richard Nixon, but in "Love Me I'm a Liberal," he chides what he considered the hypocrisy of the typical liberal. In one verse, he castigates northern supporters of the civil rights movement who condemn Jim Crow and the racism of southern bigots but deny or dismiss the prejudice against blacks in the North. Given the discomforting accuracy of Ochs's observation, the song's lines, "I love Puerto Ricans and Negroes / As long as they don't move next door," hit an appropriate note of social criticism."

Una classica country song, classe 1946, sicuramente composta da e rivolta ai bianchi delle comunità rurali degli States, gente generalmente di destra, razzista, sempre ben armata e timorata d'Iddio...

Eppure da questa canzone - specie se si pensa che fu scritta e proposta a pochi mesi dal genocidio di Hiroshima e Nagasaki ed ebbe un grande successo popolare - traspare chiaramente "l’angoisse populaire devant une arme menacante contre laquelle le commun des mortels ne peut rien faire d’autres que de prier. Le texte est très efficace (et très moderne) pour une chanson écrite en 1946" [da L'Homme Scalp]

Su Ho Chi Minh crediamo sia inutile spendere eccessive parole, tanto il personaggio è (o dovrebbe essere) noto. Ma ricordiamo brevemente alcune cose: Ho Chi Minh (in grafia originale: Hồ Chí Minh) si chiamava in realta Nguyễn Tất Thành, che significa, in vietnamita, "Colui che sarà vittorioso". Ilse Koch, born Ilse Köhler (September 22, 1906 – September 1, 1967), was the wife of Karl Koch, the commandant of the concentration camps Buchenwald from 1937 to 1941 and Majdanek from 1941 to 1943.
Ilse is infamous for taking souvenirs from the skin of murdered inmates with distinctive tattoos. Claims that she had a lampshade made out of human skin have never been verified and were discounted at her post-war trial. She was known as "The Witch of Buchenwald" ("Die Hexe von Buchenwald") by the inmates because of her sadistic cruelty and lasciviousness toward prisoners. She is also called in English "The Beast of Buchenwald" and "The Bitch of Buchenwald."

A song about the Zapatista rebels in Mexico with evident references on the destruction of the Aztec Empire by the Spanish and on the anti-latino race riots of Los Angeles, called the Zoot Suit Riots.
A Zoot Suit is a suit with high-waisted, wide-legged, tight-cuffed pegged trousers and a long coat with wide lapels and wide padded shoulders. This style of clothing was popularized by Hispanics, Italian Americans, African Americans and Filipino Americans during the late 1930s and 1940s.
The Fifth Sun refers to the mythical world-view held by the Aztec people, in which the present world was preceded by four other cycles of creation and destruction.
For Aztec people there had been four worlds, or "Suns" previous to the present universe. These earlier worlds and their inhabitants had been created, then destroyed by the catastrophic action of leadind deity figures. The present world is the fifht sun and tha Aztec saw themselves as "the People of the Sun".
