In Virginia, back in 1759, a white Scottish servant Elizabeth Gallimore, fell in love with a black slave whose name had been lost over time. Their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson, Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz, who performs under the pseudonym Fantastic Negrito, has released the compelling concept album White Jesus Black Problems based on his recently discovered lineage. The ambitious multi-media project includes a companion film.
The Album track “Man with No Name” is a painful reminder that often the identity and experiences of the oppressed are often erased. With the song and album, the stories of the courageous forgotten are being reclaimed. The tune also contains a galvanizing message of hope with the line “I keep moving on.” It is a potent statement of perseverance that continues to resonate.

Those guys were just trying to make a living in a small town. Not to detract from the work they’ve done or anything… but they just weren’t planning on leaving the country when they signed up. I thought it was an interesting standpoint.

Il gruppo Capuns e Maluns della Val Surselva (Cantone dei Grigioni) non è un gruppo musicale: è un gruppo anarchico informale che usa esclusivamente il retoromanzo (“grischun” o sursilvano) nella propria attività. Mi dicono che, attualmente, sono in cinque in tutta la valle. Desiderano restare anonimi e, naturalmente, li rispetto anche se ci siamo scritti qualche volta e ci stiamo simpatici. Hanno deciso, su mia esplicita richiesta, di tradurre qualche canzone in retoromanzo (o romancio) ed ecco ora l'Estaca. Sono strabiliato, anche per l'aspetto della lingua: mi sembra uno stupendo incrocio tra il dialetto della Val Brembana e il linguaggio di Ötzi, con decisa prevalenza di quest'ultimo (beninteso, questo conferma che Ötzi era un proto-anarchico, e che m'immagino i Capuns e Maluns più o meno simili di aspetto).

Hmm. This feels a little awkward, as I seem to be physically shaking as I go to post this. But… Here goes. The following is a song I have needed to write for 34 years, 7 months and four days. To be fair, for the first ten months of that I was locked up and unable to express myself in any real terms. If you are familiar with my song “Angels Along the Road,” that may take on a little more meaning for you after this. This is an introduction to my truth, the big ugly one I have kept mostly buried for a really, really long time. I’m hoping it might help to at least make sure that a serial criminal doesn’t leave this earth with high honors attached to his name.

25 OTTOBRE 2022: UN GIORNO QUALSIASI, COME TANTI, IN PALESTINA…

Premessa. A volte sembra che le ben note - e altre meno note - traversie subite dal popolo palestinese lo abbiano collocato (anche se non c’è mai niente di definitivo) in un campo se non opposto perlomeno diverso da quello in cui versa il popolo curdo. Per fare due esempi evidenti, Turchia e Iran appoggiano (più o meno in buona fede, più o meno strumentalmente) i palestinesi mentre reprimono duramente i curdi. Così, sempre provvisoriamente , i curdi in qualche modo, talvolta sembrano schierati con alcune potenze imperialiste occidentali (USA, Francia…).
E tuttavia, a mio modesto avviso, al di là di queste contingenze storiche, entrambi erano e sono prima di tutto popoli oppressi, martoriati, talora quasi sterminati.

È un canto il cui ritmo scandisce i ritmi di lavoro che precedono la mattanza, in particolare durante la fase più impegnativa, l’”assummata”, quando i tonni vengono tirati a galla. Il coppu o corpu è l’ultima camera, la cosiddetta “camera della morte”.
