Mi intendo abbastanza poco di stili musicali moderni, come musica sono rimasto circa al XII Secolo (e già l'Ars Nova del XIV secolo è un po' troppo moderna per i miei gusti), ma questo brano dei parmigiani P.O.G. (Preti Orge Geriatria), che immagino debba essere ska punk rock ecc. ecc. o qualcosa del genere è comunque degno di ben figurare in CCG/AWS e, credo, non sarebbe per niente dispiaciuto a certi antichi e sanguigni concittadini degli autori, come fra' Salimbene de Adam o Gherardo Segalelli (o Segarelli). Ritorniamo, in rigoroso dialetto pramzàn, alle barricate dell'Oltretorrente di centodue anni fa con un vivido racconto dove si mescolano la voglia di comprarsi una moto, gli anolén, Guido Picelli, le barricate e il famoso detto a presa di culo del gerarcone fascista ferrarese Italo Balbo, autore di màschie, eròiche e italiche trasvolate aeree, ma che non riuscì, con le sue camicie nere, a passare la Parma. The old, beloved Barricades form now the object of a new song itinerary starting, rather obviously, with one of the most celebrated (and complicated) pages of our database website. Songs about barricades are not, and cannot be, “antiwar” songs: when people were called to the barricades, they were called to fight and resist against -usually well armed- enemies carrying guns and cannons into the core of the cities. The history of barricades is long, both in terms of real, historical events and as a firmly established symbol of people's resistance against oppression. This is why there are so many songs calling to real, physical barricades made of everything thrown down into the streets to form an obstacle, and to ideal barricades made of ideas and ideals, thrown down into people's heads to form an obstacle to any kind of oppression, repression, political and social normalization.

After long (and difficult) rearrangement of this page, I'd like to thank Albatross795, Borec (Борец) and the ”Ako- contributor” (Akoniet, Akonin etc. - Aconitum Napellus?) for having contributed so many rare or uncommon versions. As they can see, their contributions have been often expanded and integrated. However, we have not retained the versions sung by French military forces: as stated in the general introduction, they are fascist versions particularly “loved” by French paratroopers (Les Hussards de Berchény).

Also there are actually Czech and Portuguese versions, but I don't know anything about these lyrics. I don't have any information…
The Portuguese version was probably sung during the Carnation Revolution, and also Czech lyrics in a songbook "brigáda zpívá", I think :3
but this is too difficult for me to find…

The traditional melody of the “Varšavjanka” was so popular around 1918, that it was used also for a number of Russian anti-communist songs. First of all, this “Izhevite song” composed by Nikolaj Arnold, a former lieutenant of the Imperial Russian army. The song is based on the uprising of Izhevsk (Udmurtia), in August 1918, when the workers of the local, historical arms factory (established in 1800 by the czar Paul I) insurged against the Red Army. On March 5, 1917, workers at the plant formed a worker's soviet, which included representatives of the workers, the army and of other citizens. Two days later the factory administration resigned and was replaced with elected officials. By mid-September of the same year, Bolsheviks took control of both the council... (Continues)

Ancora dalla rivolta di Iževsk-Votkinsk, in Udmurtia, del 1918-19, che si saldò alla Controrivoluzione “Bianca”. Come si può vedere, la Varšavjanka era diventata totalmente “bipartisan” per la sua enorme popolarità. Questa versione è, in grandi linee, una versione alternativa del Canto degli Iževiti, ed è nota tout court come la “Varšavianka Bianca”.

Another song from the Izhevsk-Votkinsk uprising of 1918-19, which tied up with the “White” counter-revolution. As you can see, Varshavianka had become totally bipartisan due to its huge popularity. As a matter of fact, this version is an alternative version of the Izhevite Song, and is known as the “White Varshavjanka”. [RV]

A song from the 1st Russian revolution of 1905. It was first recited as a poem on a workers' meeting in Sormovo (now a city district of Nizhny Novgorod, but a separate city at that time) on 9 July 1905, six months after the “Bloody Sunday” which marked the beginning of the uprising in St. Petersburg. The poem was later distributed in broadsides reading “To be sung to the tune of Varshavyanka”, but this is possible only from the 2nd verse onwards. The 1st verse and the refrain do not match the Varshavyanka tune, and a possible tune could be that of the song “The Red Banner”. The author of the song is unknown. [RV]

Il testo della Rossijanka, sulla medesima melodia della Varšavjanka, proviene da un opuscolo pubblicato nel 1906/1907 nella città di Enisejsk (in Siberia, a 338 da Krasnojarsk) con il titolo: “Poesie e Canti” (Archivio della Biblioteca dell'Istituto di Marxismo-Leninismo del Comitato Centrale del PCUS). Un testo dal contenuto simile alla Rossijanka con lo stesso inizio (“La Russia geme” ecc.) si trova in un quaderno di canzoni manoscritte proveniente dai primi anni della Rivoluzione Russa, appartenente al gruppo RSDRP della Manifattura di Lino Romanov (ex Romanovo-Borisoglebsk, ora Tutaev, nella regione di Jaroslavl). Esta é uma canção que pediam pra legendar desde que lancei o canal Eslavo (YouTube), em 2010. Trata-se da canção socialista polonesa A Varsoviana, traduzida a partir de sua versão russa. Em polonês, ela é conhecida como Warszawianka, e em russo, “Варшавянка”, ambas com a mesma pronúncia: “Varshavianka”. Às vezes se diz também A Varsoviana de 1905, pra não ser confundida com A Varsoviana de 1831, hino nacionalista polonês composto durante uma revolta contra o Império Russo em 1830-31.

This powerful and very beautiful Dutch version of both the Warszawianka and !A las barricadas! could be called a “mixed” version with original characters. It was written in 1972 by Jaap van de Merwe together with Rob van de Meeberg, Marius Monkau, Nelly Frijda and Marjan Kweksilber. Jaap van de Merwe and Marjan Kweksilber also sing the song. The song shows a number of variants in the lyrics, and some points are controversial in the lyrics available in the Web; btw, the lyrics shown in the video do not always match what it is really sung. So, we have decided to transcribe the lyrics by direct listening, with a number of notes. The lyrics are written in a form of Dutch somewhat archaic, or high-falutin, even in pronunciation... La versione portoghese 2 è stata creata ascoltando, con compagno portoghese, quindi potrebbero esserci degli errori...
Inoltre, dopo aver controllato di nuovo il testo più tardi, penso che "Em filas" sia più corretto di "Em vilas"
Per quanto ho tradotto, il testo portoghese è quasi identico alla versione francese, ed ecco la versione corretta :3

La Varsovienne de 1905 est un hymne que chantèrent les ouvriers du royaume de Pologne au cours de la révolution de 1905-1907, lorsque 30 d’entre eux furent fusillés pendant les manifestations du Premier mai à Varsovie. Wacław Święcicki en avait rédigé les paroles en 1879, lors de son incarcération dans le Bloc 10 de la citadelle de Varsovie, en raison de ses activités au sein du parti socialiste. La musique avait été composée par son codétenu, le musicien Józef Pławiński qui s’était inspiré en grande partie du chant du soulèvement de janvier, la „Marche des Zouaves”. A l’époque communiste, la 2ème strophe de la version polonaise fut modifiée pour en faire disparaître les références religieuses.

Nel 1938, il poeta inglese Randall Swingler, allora ventinovenne, pubblicò nel volume The Left Song Book, edito dalla casa editrice Victor Gollancz ltd., una sua versione della Varšavjanka, o meglio, di Whirlwinds of Danger. Il canto era stato arrangiato dal compositore Alan Bush; gli stessi Randall Swingler e Alan Bush erano i curatori dell'intero volume per conto della Workers' Music Association.

Di Whirlwinds of Danger il canto mantiene il titolo e riprende, inalterata, la prima strofa (il ritornello è simile, ma leggermente modificato). Carissimo Borec, ho visto che hai riproposto in approvazione una presupposta versione latina ("Carmen de Warsaw") della Warszawianka. Questa, a suo tempo, era stata già cassata in quanto si tratta evidentemente di una "traduzione" fatta da qualcuno con il tool automatico di Google, o comunque da qualcuno che non conosce neppure l'abc della lingua latina, una vera e propria accozzaglia di parole messe a caso mischiate con parole e frasi in inglese. Ti pregherei quindi di non riproporla più, perché tanto non verrà mai approvata.

Colgo l'occasione per dirti anche che la versione persiana che avevi messo in approvazione è stata eliminata, ma stavolta -semplicemente- perché era già presente nella pagina, ed inviata da tu stesso. Vi ho però integrato il video della canzone.

Dear Riccardo,

The title of the 1918 Finnish version of Waszavianka (VARŠAVJANKA) has been translated into plain Finnish as Varsovan Laulu. This is basically all right, because that's what it is in Finnish. However, there's a but: people who know the song refer to it as VARŠAVJANKA according to the Polish original, whereas Varsovan laulu usually refers to Moonshine or Rectified spirit smuggled to Finland mainly from Estonia during the prohibition (1919 - 1932). Therefore, I would be inclined to have Varsovan Laulu deleted in this context.

Per il resto, credo appunto che tu abbia già detto tutto quel che c'è da dire. Sono ben cosciente, nel caso di pagine come questa o di altre, che le vecchie canzoni rivoluzionarie, di lotta e di libertà (citi anche l' “Internazionale”, che ebbe origine durante la Comune di Parigi...) hanno fatto una pessima fine nei paesi dell'ex “socialismo reale”, ed è inevitabile. Dear Juha, I have deleted the “alcoholic” title, not without a certain regret in my heart. Now that I know that I had given a version of the Varšavjanka the title of “Moonshine”, I feel very amused deep in my roots. Well, there is no Irish version of the song in this page but, in case I should find one, I could give it the title of “Poitín”...

Now I ask you a service. There's another Finnish version which seems to have originated in the US. It was recorded 1916 by the Finnish-American artist Juho Koskelo for “Työväen-Opisto” in Smithville, Minnesota. I have listened to the version and checked if it matches one of the versions already included in the site, but I got the impression that it is totally different. Of course, the recording is very old (and it is always touching to listen to something recorded 105 years ago...), and I may be wrong. The lyrics aren't to be found anywhere. Could you kindly help us solve this mystery...?
