Francis Rowntree (West Belfast) : 11 ans, mort le 26 avril 1972. Un soldat anglais lui a tiré une balle de caoutchouc (modifiée artisanalement - un noyau métallique y avait été inséré) dans la tête à une distance d'environ deux mètres le 22 avril 1972. Francis revenait de jouer au football, et portait encore sa tenue. Il n'y avait pas d'émeute en cours (mais une émeute a éclaté juste après, et il y avait eu cinq jours d'émeutes juste avant), le soldat qui a tiré n'avait reçu aucune formation à l'usage des balles en caoutchouc (en particulier, il ne savait pas quelle est la distance minimum d'engagement, ni les zones corporelles à ne pas atteindre).

Irish involvement in the Spanish Civil War has been covered by a number of books, beginning with Michael O'Riordan's 1979 book, The Connolly Column. This was followed, 20 years later by two others (see below). These books have resulted in increased research into the Irish role in the war leading to new details being found about those involved.

In 1936 General Franco, of the Army of Africa, invaded Spain. He planned to overthrow the democratically elected centre-left government. He hoped it would quickly fall, but backed by the working class it fought back, defeating the initial surge by the fascists, leading to a three year Civil War.

From the start, Hitler's fascist Germany backed Franco's Nationalists.... (Continues)
