Death of The Blue Eagle - George Davis - 1966


Death of the Blue Eagle concerns the ending of the short-lived NRA (National Recovery Act 1933- 1935). Apparently this U. S. Government act was vitally important to the mine workers although it was drawn up with all industries in mind. The NRA was based on the principle of industrial self-regulation under government supervision through a system of fair competition codes. It established guidelines for fair prices and wages, and invited employees and employers to sign up under the slogan "We do our part." When the NRA was declared unconstitutional due to monopolistic practices by unscrupulous members, the entire act was repealed. This song presents a popular interpretation: "the eagle (symbol of the NRA) went down shouting 'Hurray for one and all,' but most folks couldn't take it, they had to let it fall.'' The song Easter was written in mid-2024, and we first rehearsed it by the beach in Wye River, on the southern coast of Australia, where we spent the weekend together playing new songs and hanging out at the Wye River pub. Easter is a narrative song that tells the story of the Easter Uprising in Dublin in 1916. The lyrics encompasses the memories of those actually involved. The background is that Ireland was tired of British rule, brutal oppression and broken promises of home-rule, and while England were engaged with the First World War, Ireland took its chance at becoming sovereign. The uprising was defeated after a week with the leaders being executed and many others imprisoned, but these brave Irish women and men pathed the way for the republic of Ireland a number of years later. This song continues to tell their stories, and pays respect to their bravery that has impacted the generations after them. May they never be forgotten.
