This song is partly about the tragic life of Léon Theremin, inventor of one of the of the first electronic instruments in the 1930's. He ended up owing too much money to banks to continue developing his futuristic devices. So he returned to Russia, only to be thrown into a concentration camp until he was released and forced to invent things of Military significance (such as the world's first bugging device).
I brought Albert Glinsky's biography of Theremin but I couldn't read it because it was too depressing. It is a great injustice that of the smartest people of the last 100 years could not find the freedom to pursue his dreams in either "Democratic" or "Socialist" states due to the respective economic and ideological restrictions that each culture imposed to discourage individuals them from pursuing anything idealistic or radical.

"If you ever see a compilation LP (Vinyl) called "Songs Of The Protest Era" it is absolutely one of the best records ever made. Every song features incredibly weird guitar sounds/timing changes, genius lyrics that cut to bone and most importantly the most naive and defiant melodies and harmonies ever written.
In my homage to the genre I think I got the lyrics right but my guitar playing is too post-punk and I don't have the angelic voice required to deliver the lyrical venom in a deceptively sweet voice.
People dug it when we performed this live with an ad lib harmonica solo in the middle. Don't like playing it anymore however because it doesn't fit in with the rest of the songs and it's too depressing..

On peut imaginer que le Turc en question serait un émule et un successeur d'Ali Agça qui le 13 mai 1981 tira trois balles Place Saint Pierre sur le pape de l'époque, Jean-Paul II. Comme il apparut par la suite, Ali Agça manqua son coup. Il est sorti de prison en 2010.
À propos de Turc, mon ami Marco Valdo M.I., je suggère également d'aller voir ta chanson «La Croisade de Pierre », dont l'antienne est assez proche de celle de cette chanson du Dieu blindé. Rappelle-toi, elle disait parlant du déferlement des chrétiens au travers de l'Europe, aller-retour Jérusalem et la soi-disant Terre Sainte :
« À la fin, savez-vous ce qui arriva
Ce fut le Turc qui nous en délivra. »
et
la chanson du Dieu blindé dit très exactement :

I Greci manifestano sentimenti fraterni per gli Armeni, con i quali hanno condiviso le violente persecuzioni dei Turchi, già in atto ben prima (1894-96) del genocidio armeno del 1915-16 e della cacciata dei Greci del 1922. "A little song in a Latin rhythm with a Canarian timple (a five-string viheula-shaped ukulele) providing local colour! OK, it ain't flamenco, but it's the only song I've ever performed live on a flamenco guitar borrowed from a flamenco singer.
I'd been reading some of the 15th to 17th century original accounts of exploration, and the idea just came into my head. I have never before made a recording using the timple, which is an instrument only played in the Canary Islands, one of the staging posts for the New World. I had to learn to play it for this and it sounds very bright and quick; it's an instrument which could be used more".

Un'altra via d'uscita
Sono piccolina, mi chiamo Giorgia e scrivo con l'aiuto di mamma Barbara. A me questa canzone piace, è simpatica e carina. L'ho sentita per la prima volta perchè a Barbara piace Daniele Sepe che è il suo cantautore preferito, e da allora la sento quasi ogni giorno... Ho imparato a memoria il testo! "The week before Armistice Day (November 11) 1999 a story was published in the Southern Reporter, researched by Bill Bruce, which neatly and emotively retold how Piper D L Laidlaw VC reversed the fortunes of a Border battalion fighting in the trenches of the Great War. I wrote the song in a moderate Border Scots dialect, which is easily understood, and played it locally. The lyrics were published by the newspaper. Like most of my songs, the inspiration was immediate and it took around 90 minutes to complete and a further hour to record. This is the second take. The pipes, ambient noise and gunfire effects are added on a Roland JV-50 keyboard and the rest is a one-take recording, playing a Lowden O-10 guitar in drop D tuning and singing. The recording is on a Roland VS-880".

Dopo Die Ahnung, un altro e ancor più chiaro presagio di Erich Mühsam, “poeta e combattente per la libertà”, sul suo destino, avveratosi 20 anni dopo in un campo di concentramento, sotto i colpi delle SS naziste.
Quel che Mühsam non poteva presagire è ciò che accadde, dopo il suo assassinio, all’amata moglie Kreszentia, familiarmente chiamata Zenzl, libertaria come il marito. Fuggita prima a Praga e poi in Unione Sovietica, Zenzl venne arrestata a Mosca nel 1936 e imprigionata per cinque anni in un gulag staliniano in Siberia. Il “Romanzero” è stata una delle ultime opere scritte da Heine, morto nel 1856.
Benchè si fosse riaccostato alla fede, forse per la grave malattia di cui soffriva, colui che maledisse quel Dio che non fa che saziare l’uomo di scherni non era comunque diventato meno scettico rispetto alla religione organizzata. Ne è testimonianza questa poesia che trasforma il passo biblico dell’agonia del re David e della sua investitura dell’erede Salomone (Primo Libro dei Re, 2, 1-9) nel racconto della transizione da una dittatura ad un’altra, col tutto il suo consueto corredo di sfruttamento del popolo e di miserie e congiure di palazzo.

L’orrido presentimento del Male che si avvicina… Chissà se Erich Mühsam si ricordò di questa breve poesia scritta 25 anni prima quando, all’alba del 28 febbraio 1933, i nazisti (e non il postino) suonarono il campanello della sua abitazione (o, più probabilmente, ne sfondarono la porta) mostrando a quel “giudeo sovversivo” un mandato di arresto firmato di suo pugno da Joseph Goebbels…
No, le sue sensazioni non lo avevano ingannato, ma non aveva fatto in tempo a fuggire…
Mühsam, come tantissimi altri, finì inghiottito nel buco nero concetrazionario che i nazisti già facevano funzionare a pieno regime…

Questo brano è un po' la storia di una transumanza umana il popolo delle navi, boat people, che come gli animali lasciano le loro terre aride e secche per cercarne di più verdi altrove, questa gente lascia le loro terre per cercare fortuna sulle nostre coste dove probabilmente poi non ce n'è.
Anni fa abbiamo pensato di dedicare a questo popolo un brano che si intitola per l'appunto Boat People

The music video was directed by Jack Cole, and was the first of three Travis Tritt music videos that tell the story of a crippled veteran named Mac Singleton. Travis Tritt plays Mac, who's struggling through his time at a rehabilitation clinic after being injured in a war, and has nightmares about it every night. He meets a friend named Al (played by Barry Scott) after waking up from one of his nightmares. Mac is also struggling from being away from his wife Annie. It was featured in CMT's 100 Greatest Music Videos in 2004, where it ranked at #64
