These days I no longer believe in a two-state solution to the problems of Israel-Palestine. This would only cement in place the enormous historical injustice done to the Palestinians by the late colonial movement known as Zionism. Besides it is now a virtual impossibility because of the spread of settlements.
The reality is that Israel-Palestine is already one country. It just happens to be a country in which one group of people oppresses and humiliates another while stealing their land piece by piece - and crying foul when the victims try to fight back. The central issue is not one state or two - but human rights.

"This song is meant to be a satire on Suicide Bombers, ...my exasperated response to the madness of people who think that by blowing themselves up and killing people who have a different belief to their own they are somehow going to achieve their political goals and are simultaneously doing something for 'God'.
It's bad enough for an adult to convince themselves this is a noble thing to do. Admittedly it takes a kind of bravery - albeit a bravery which depends upon an irrational belief in some better afterlife - but what kind of person can teach such nonsense to children and send them off to their deaths? And do this in the name of 'God'?
Good people everywhere - Muslims, Jews, Christians, Atheists - whatever - need to stand up to these dangerously brainwashed individuals and tell them the truth. They need help.

The Hmongs are an ethnic group from Laos. Prior to the Viet war, they were mainly supporters of the Democratic Party. During the Viet war against the communist military government, the US recruited them as spies. They were promised security and food...
I went for a trip organized by Radion International to the camp. We were there to provide the needs of the kids by giving them some biscuits and Milo. What I saw and heard and felt made me write this song. I hope that I managed to convey the emotions they feel accurately enough..

"I wrote this song while I was travelling in China a while ago - I had the melody before I left and a couple of ideas - wrote the lyrics on the road and recorded it about a week after I got back.. on 21 July 2007.
Perhaps being in China - one country where religion is decidedly on the back foot - had something to do with the way the song came out. It is refreshing, after travelling in many parts of the world where religion dominates society, to walk through streets full of people who see the world essentially as it is - without the weird distortions that religious views impose. China may have its problems, but at least women have equal rights for the most part and can walk around freely in tee shirts if they want - and I don't feel threatened there that if I upset someone's religious feelings they might kill me!

Alberto Perino, leader storico, è raggiante, sale sul trattore che apre il corteo, prende il microfono: «Diranno che siamo quattro gatti», esclama con un sorriso sornione. Una canzone tratta da una poesia di Joan Oliver i Sellarès, poeta catalano che si firmava con lo pseudonimo di "Pere Quart".
Di fede repubblicana, alla vittoria dei fascisti fu evacuato all'estero e visse in Francia, Argentina e Cile. Nel 1948 tornò a Barcellona dedicandosi alla traduzione delle opere di Molière e Čechov ma senza rinunciare ad una critica sarcastica ed acida del capitalismo, della società dei consumi ed del regime franchista ("Vacances pagades" del 1960).

Alla fine della seconda guerra mondiale rientrò clandestinamente in Catalogna per riorganizzare il PSUC. Nel 1951 fu catturato dalla polizia franchista. Imprigionato e torturato fu quindi espulso dalla Spagna nel 1954. Ma vi rientrò subito per ricominciare ancora una volta l'attività politica clandestina... Un vero lottatore!

Raimon si rivolge alla classe dirigente spagnola, ai vari "señor Estève" e "señor González" (e implicitamente al "señor Franco") i quali, sempre immobili e vecchi come montagne, sembravano non accorgersi che le loro rocce, solo in apparenza indistruttibili, non avrebbero resistito ancora a lungo all'assalto delle nuove generazioni e delle loro istanze di democrazia e di giustizia...
Il riferimento alla città basca di Irún, al confine con la Francia, è dovuto al fatto che proprio ad Irún nel 1936 si consumò uno degli atti più sanguinosi della guerra civile: il 2 settembre le truppe franchiste misero letteralmente a ferro e fuoco la città, distruggendola completamente. La caduta di Irún fu un colpo durissimo per i repubblicani, che si trovarono tagliata la via dei rifornimenti dalla Francia.

E' una canzone d'esilio, anche se Raimon non fuggì mai dalla sua terra benché nel mirino della polizia franchista e continuamente colpito dalla censura del regime. Sta di fatto che in quegli anni, e soprattutto dopo l'ultimo concerto a Madrid nel 1968, Raimon poté esprimersi liberamente soltanto nei concerti e nelle produzioni realizzate all'estero...

Judith à Caporetto est la huitante et unième chanson du Cycle du Cahier ligné, constitué d'éléments tirés du Quaderno a Cancelli de Carlo Levi.
Qu'est-ce que c'est encore que ce titre étrange ?, dit l'âne Lucien en mettant ses oreilles en points d'interrogation. Que vient faire Judith à Caporetto ou l'inverse, que Caporetto vient faire dans l'histoire de Judith, dont je crois d'ailleurs me souvenir que je l'avais rencontrée et même portée sur mon dos d'âne; c'était en Judée, il y a quelque temps et un peu après, elle avait égorgé un général... Quant Caporetto, n'est-ce pas ce lieu où il y eut une fameuse bataille avec plein de morts ?

Via Panicale è una vecchia, vecchissima, stravecchia via del centro di Firenze, nel quartiere di San Lorenzo, nei pressi del Mercato Centrale. Chi è di Firenze, e forse anche qualcheduno che non lo è, saprà che il quartiere di San Lorenzo, da un bel po' di anni, è "nel mirino" di tutte quelle forze (politiche, mediatiche, e soprattutto affaristiche -che delle forze "politiche" e "mediatiche" si servono come braccio armato) che ne vorrebbero fare, come tutto il centro, una specie di finto "salottino". Ora, però, si dà il caso che via Panicale, come tutto il quartiere, proprio la vocazione a essere un salottino non ce l'abbia mai avuta; ma poco importa. One of three songs that I have written around the Middle-East conflict. This one focuses on the mad people who are actually hoping for the troubles in the region to escalate into a "final conflict" prior to the "Rapture" and the "Second Coming" of Jesus Christ. These are people who obviously don't have much grip on reality. It would be OK if they were just harmless nutters - but this particular wacky belief is potentially very dangerous.
These are people who call themselves Christians but who actually hope for Armageddon and for millions to die. They expect to escape death themselves and selfishly hope to be 'saved' by their faith. In my view these people are even more evil - if that is possible - than suicide bombers who actually have far more limited objectives.... (Continues)
