Když mne stará matka	Songs my mother taught me,
zpívat, zpívat učívala,	In the days long vanished;
podivno, že často,	Seldom from her eyelids
často slzívala.	Were the teardrops banished.
A teď také pláčem [1]	Now I teach my children,
snědé líce mučím,	Each melodious measure.
když cigánské děti	Oft the tears are flowing,
