| Portiamo la cesta cigolante, | We carry the creaking basket, |
| zappiamo l'insalata tremolante, | We grow the quivering salad, |
| impastiamo melma e argilla, | We mix mud and clay, |
| cuciamo il vestito alla riccona, | We sew garments for rich ladies, |
| stacchiamo lardo dai fianchi del porco, | We cut bacon off pork's hips, |
| fondiamo strutto, ingozziamo oche; | We melt lard, we fatten geese; |
| e se la sera fluida si spande attorno, | And when the night flows all around, |
| non c'è gioia per noi. Solo un salario. | There's no joy for us. Only a wage. |
| Costruiamo un muro inutile | We build walls of no use |
| e la caserma del nostro destino, | And the barracks of our fate, |
| nostro figlio per strada, dalla vetrina | Our son craves through the shop window |
| guarda e basta il gioco del meccano, | For the model construction toy, |
| e se nostra figlia chiede un vestitino | And if our daughter asks for a little dress |
| per la sua bambola a noi che tessiamo, | For her doll, to us who do weaving work, |
| il suo desiderio le resterà sulle labbra; | Her lips don't open to her longing; |

| Davanti agli occhi solo ci scorrono | Before our eyes, only belts and pulleys |
| cinghie e pulegge; facciamo vagoni, | Run unendingly; we build train wagons, |
