CULLODEN'S HARVEST | LA MESSE DI CULLODEN |
| |
Cold winds on the moors blow. | Soffiano venti freddi sulle brughiere, |
Warm the enemy's fires glow. | ardono caldi i fuochi del nemico. |
Like the harvest of Culloden, | Come la messe di Culloden |
Pain and fear and death grow. | crescon la pena, la paura e la morte. |
| |
'Twas love of our prince drove us to Drumossie, | Fu l’amore per il nostro principe a portarci a Drumossie, [*1] |
But in scarcely the time that it takes me to tell | Ma nel tempo appena che mi ci vuole a narrare |
The flower of our country lay scorched by an army | il fiore del nostro paese giacque straziato da un’armata |
As ruthless and red as the embers of hell. | spietata e rosso sangue come i tizzoni infernali. |
| |
Cold winds on the moors blow. | Soffiano venti freddi sulle brughiere, |
Warm the enemy's fires glow. | ardono caldi i fuochi del nemico. |
Like the harvest of Culloden, | Come la messe di Culloden |
Pain and fear and death grow. | crescon la pena, la paura e la morte. |
| |
The Campbell and McFall did the work of the English. [*2], |
McDonald in anger did no work at all. | I McDonald, in preda all’ira, non fecero nessun gioco. |
'Twas musket and cannon against honour and courage. | Furon moschetti e cannoni contro onore e coraggio, |
Invading men stood while our clansmen did fall. |
| |
Cold winds on the moors blow. | Soffiano venti freddi sulle brughiere, |
Warm the enemy's fires glow. | ardono caldi i fuochi del nemico. |
Like the harvest of Culloden, | Come la messe di Culloden |
Pain and fear and death grow. | crescon la pena, la paura e la morte. |
| |
None other than children are left to the women, | Nessuno altro che i bambini restano ormai alle donne, |
With only the memory of father and son | con soltanto il ricordo di un padre e di un figlio. |
Turned out of their homes to make shelter for strangers. |
The blackest of hours on this land has begun. |
| |
Cold winds on the moors blow. | Soffiano venti freddi sulle brughiere, |
Warm the enemy's fires glow. | ardono caldi i fuochi del nemico. |
Like the harvest of Culloden, | Come la messe di Culloden |
Pain and fear and death grow. | crescon la pena, la paura e la morte. |
