Why This War No Longer Makes Sense [אלי אלי]

Una vita da soldato per la politica: perché questa guerra non ha più senso.

Shalom. Probabilmente non mi conosci. Dubito che tu abbia il tempo di leggere Haaretz a Gaza. Tuttavia, nutro una flebile speranza che i tuoi genitori o i tuoi conoscenti riescano a fare in modo che questa lettera ti raggiunga, anche se non è facile da leggere né da scrivere. Non sai ancora che diventerai il novecentesimo soldato a cadere.
Nel momento in cui scrivo, 898 soldati sono caduti nella guerra iniziata il 7 ottobre. Cominciò come una risposta legittima di uno Stato peri difendersi dopo che un’organizzazione di terroristi barbari ha invaso il suo territorio e ha massacrato i suoi cittadini. Col passare del tempo si è trasformata in una sconsiderata campagna di vendetta che sta distruggendo la Striscia di Gaza insieme a Israele.

Ti scrivo affinché tu non diventi la novecentesima vittima. Tu e la tua famiglia non lo meritate. Siete stati abbandonati. Sacrificati. Avrei scritto al capo di Stato Maggiore dell’esercito, ma ho perso ogni speranza in lui. È un codardo. Se non lo fosse, batterebbe i pugni sul tavolo del Consiglio dei ministri e chiederebbe che questa guerra inutile finisca.

Fai parte di una guerra che da tempo non ha più alcun obiettivo, giustificazione o scopo degni di considerazione. L’unico obiettivo è stato di preservare la coalizione e soddisfare le fantasie dei folli jihadisti ebrei che sognano di distruggere Gaza ed espellere la sua popolazione. Se non sei uno di loro, non è per questo che ti sei arruolato.
Non ti sei neppure arruolato nell’esercito per partecipare ai crimini di guerra che il governo e l’esercito stanno commettendo. Questi crimini ti perseguiteranno per molti anni a venire.
Non abbiamo più nulla da ottenere da Gaza. Chiedetelo al figlio di Smotrich. In qualche modo, il suo profilo sanitario è stato abbassato poco prima che arrivasse il suo turno di entrare nell’enclave. Questo è il secondo figlio. Il primogenito di Smotrich è riuscito a studiare in una yeshivah [scuola rabbinica per maschi, dalla primaria all’ universitaria, ndT] dopo il massacro del 7 ottobre, a fidanzarsi, a sposarsi e a dare un primo nipote al nonno Bezalel, che oggi ha 44 anni. Ha anche vinto una lotteria per un terreno edificabile a un prezzo stracciato ed è riuscito a scansare la leva.

Anche tu meriti di studiare, di sposarti e di avere figli. Tu capisci meglio di me che sei esausto, svuotato, logorato e tormentato continuamente da cimici e pidocchi. Hai fame di cibo caldo e cucinato, desideri una doccia e un letto caldo su cui riposare.
Non sei uno sprovveduto. Vedi con i tuoi occhi che non ci sono davvero dei terroristi da combattere. Escono solo di tanto in tanto dal terreno per ucciderti con ordigni esplosivi o proiettili anticarro. Sai bene quanti soldati ti hanno preceduto sono rimasti uccisi negli ultimi mesi dal crollo di edifici, da ordigni esplosivi, o in incidenti occasionali. Sei l’ultimo che ha bisogno di sentire parlare di stanchezza, di logoramento della disciplina di combattimento e di ottundimento.

Di tanto in tanto un comandante di alto livello viene a tenerti un discorso sulla sconfitta di Hamas e sul ritorno degli ostaggi. Ma non c’è nessuna sconfitta e non ci sono ostaggi. La settimana scorsa gli ordini sono cambiati. Ora ti muovi in convogli consistenti, ben protetti, impacciati, lenti e in assetto difensivo. Proprio come nel sud del Libano, nella zona cuscinetto di sicurezza che non garantiva alcuna sicurezza. Un paese forte sa difendersi nei propri confini. L’esercito in cui sei arruolato si chiama Forza di Difesa Israeliana, non esercito di annientamento di Gaza.
Vorrei raccontarti in breve cosa ha fatto il governo sino a questa settimana, quello per cui stai rischiando la vita a Gaza. Netanyahu era al Waldorf Astoria con sua moglie a festeggiare una bizzarra conferenza evangelicale. Il ministro degli Esteri Gideon Sa’ar è volato a Uman per organizzare il pellegrinaggio di massa alla tomba del rabbino Nachman [ rabbino fondatore del movimento chassidico, ndT] in occasione del Rosh Hashanah. Il ministro dell’Economia Nir Barkat è volato nelle Filippine. Ha in programma di andare in Giappone Il mese prossimo. Il ministro dei Trasporti Miri Regev è partito questa settimana per una vacanza privata a Creta. Il ministro della Protezione ambientale Idit Silman e Zeev Elkin [parlamentare, ndT] si sono rimpinzati durante un evento delle primarie del Likud a Nahariya.
Anche tu meriti una vacanza in un hotel, di andare in Europa e in Asia, di mangiare e bere bene. E, cosa più importante, di vivere. Perché dovresti morire per loro?
Questa settimana la Brigata Nahal ha processato tre soldati che avevano annunciato di non poter entrare di nuovo a Gaza. Il medico che li ha visitati ha dichiarato che erano mentalmente idonei. Certo che sono sani di mente! È una rielaborazione della famosa scena di “Comma 22”, in cui Doc Daneeka afferma che chiunque continui a partecipare a voli di combattimento è pazzo, ma poi spiega che chiunque chieda di non volare non può essere davvero pazzo.
Sei troppo giovane. Hai tutta la vita davanti. Non diventare il soldato numero 900. Torna a casa.

Shalom. You probably don't know me. I doubt that you have time to read Haaretz in Gaza. I have a faint hope that perhaps your parents or acquaintances can find a way to get this letter to you, even though it's not an easy one to read or write. You also don't know yet that you'll become the 900th soldier to die.
At the time of writing, 898 soldiers have fallen in the war that started on October 7. It began as a legitimate response by a country defending itself after a barbaric terror organization invaded its territory and slaughtered its citizens. Over time, it has transformed into a reckless campaign of revenge that is destroying the Gaza Strip along with Israel.
I'm writing you so that you don't become the 900th fatality. You and your family don't deserve that. You were abandoned. Sacrificed. I would have written to the army's chief of staff, but I've despaired of him. He's a coward. If he weren't, he would bang on the cabinet's meeting table and demand that this pointless war be ended.
You are part of a war that has had no worthy objective, justification or purpose for a long time. The only goal has been to preserve the coalition and to fulfill the fantasies of the insane Jewish jihadists who dream of obliterating Gaza and expelling its population. If you aren't one of them, this is not why you enlisted.
You also didn't join the army to take part in committing war crimes, which the government and army are perpetrating. These crimes will haunt you and us for many years to come.

We no longer have anything to get out of Gaza. Ask Smotrich's son. Somehow, his health profile was downgraded just before his turn to enter the enclave came around. This is the second son. Smotrich's firstborn has managed to study at a yeshiva since the October 7 massacre, to get engaged, marry and produce a first grandchild for 44-year-old Grandpa Bezalel. He also managed to win a lottery for a building plot at rock-bottom price, and avoid the draft.
You, too, deserve to study, get married, have children. You understand more than I do that you're exhausted, depleted, worn out, constantly itching due to a plague of bugs and lice. You're hungry for warm, cooked food, longing for a shower and a warm bed to lie on.
You're not a sucker. You see with your own eyes that there aren't really any terrorists to fight. They only pop out here and there from below the ground to kill you with an explosive device or anti-tank shell. You know very well how many of the soldiers who preceded you have been killed in recent months by collapsing buildings, exploding ordnance or unnecessary accidents. You're the last one who needs to be told about being worn out, about the erosion of combat discipline, about dulled senses.
From time to time, you have a senior commander coming to give you a speech about vanquishing Hamas and returning the hostages. But there's no vanquishing and no hostages. Last week, orders were changed. You now move around in heavy, well-protected, static, slow and defensive convoys. Just like it was in southern Lebanon, in the security buffer zone, which afforded no security. A strong country knows how to defend itself from the border. The army you joined is called the Israel Defense Force, not the army of Gaza's annihilation.
I'd like to tell you a bit about what the cabinet was up to this week, the one in whose service you're risking your life in Gaza. Netanyahu was at the Waldorf Astoria with his wife, celebrating at a wacky evangelical conference. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar flew to Uman to make arrangements for the mass pilgrimage to the grave of Rabbi Nachman at Rosh Hashanah. Economy Minister Nir Barkat flew to the Philippines. He plans to go to Japan next month. Transportation Minister Miri Regev again took off this week for a private vacation in Crete. Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman and Zeev Elkin gorged themselves at a Likud primaries event in Nahariya.
You, too, deserve a vacation at a hotel, to go to Europe and Asia, to eat and drink well. And most importantly: to live. Why should you die for them?
The Nahal Brigade tried three soldiers this week after they announced that they couldn't enter Gaza again. The mental health officer who examined them ruled that they were mentally fit. Obviously, they are sane! That is a total reconstruction of the unforgettable scene in "Catch-22," where Doc Daneeka says anyone who keeps flying combat missions is crazy, but then explains that anyone who asks to be grounded can't really be crazy.
You are too young. All your life is ahead of you. Don't be the 900th soldier. Come home.
