In a bygone year in Palestine
Lived Jesus Christ a famed Rabbi
Said he if children ask for bread
Do not give them a stone instead
Far better that you drown in the sea
Than harm children or stop their belief
What would he say if he could see
The hunger that we don’t relieve?
For in Gaza today where food aid is banned
Children eat not flour but sand
Infants in thousands are killed in the fray
Murdered by missiles and bombs that slay
Legs and arms daily severed from bone
Orphaned they’re left to starve alone
Their childhood is stolen by adults obscene
Their growth is stunted despite our pleas
If disease fails to make them ill
Malnutrition most surely will
For in Gaza today where food aid is banned
Children eat not flour but sand
This famine by Israel with U.S. support
Kills and maims, cuts kids’ lives short
In Gaza where the UN is banned
The children eat not flour but sand
In Gaza where food aid is banned
Children eat not flour but sand
Lived Jesus Christ a famed Rabbi
Said he if children ask for bread
Do not give them a stone instead
Far better that you drown in the sea
Than harm children or stop their belief
What would he say if he could see
The hunger that we don’t relieve?

This song describes the horror of a young boy appearing on our screens stuffing his mouth with sand. The sand was a substitute for the flour which has vanished from Gaza.
Israel closed the northern border to genuine aid from the UN and relief agencies, while hypocritically instituting a so-called humanitarian organisation with US support. There was no safety at these distribution points, which were nothing more than yet another arm of Israel’s genocidal campaign, where aid seekers became easy targets and hundreds were slaughtered.
During the American war in Vietnam, the image of a naked girl whose body was burnt with napalm shocked many observers and perhaps changed their minds about the war. The image of a boy eating sand in Gaza should have a similarly powerful effect.
