Why Is It?
(Al Grannum)

(1971?)

Double-sided anti-Vietnam War single, with the tracks "Why Is It?" and "When I Come Home"

When I Come Home / Why Is It?

The second track "When I Come Home" was narrated from the perspective of "a soldier serving my country". He wondered why he had to kill other people. He hoped that when he returned to the US there would be a "lasting peace" in honour of those that had died.

Vietnam War: Soul, Gospel, & Funk Records
A soldier serving my country
in a way off foreign land
And I wonder
why is it,
I have the task of killing my fellow man

You know,
this world could be such a beautiful place
if everyone just had a little more faith...
faith that tomorrow our burdens would be a little lighter
and that the next day
sun will be a little lighter

How long will it take
before the human race
learns to live together
and love instead of hate

Somehow there is just not enough love in the world today
Instead of fighting each other
people should take the time to pray
everyone so afraid to love
Is there an answer?
or we will always say
that's the way things are today

When I come home
here's hoping the grass will be greener
the air will be cleaner
the trees will have leaves of yellow and brown
and there'll diamond light stones along the ground

How long will it take
before the human race
learns to live together
and love instead of hate

Yes, when I come home,
there will be peace, love and joy
And there will be no more guns
to make the noise of war

And for those boys that went to die
let it not be in vain
When I come home here's hoping
that there will be no tears
only a lasting peace
like it should have been before
years and years

When I come home
not as a soldier
but as a human being
when I come home
when I come home
when I come home
