Walking This Land
walking this land

On the day of the peace marches prior to the current Iraqi war fiasco I attended a photographic exhibition about the use of depleted uranium in Iraq in the first gulf war and the effects of over ten years exposure to the population.

America and Great Britain filled Iraq with the equivalent of thirty-five Hiroshima bombs during that war resulting in sheep born with five heads and eight to ten deformed babies now born per day in Bagdad hospitals. Prior to that war one deformed baby was born a week.  No doubt that figure will rise in years to come from the effects from the use of more in this war now. After watching the huge turnout at the peace rallies on television news that night I sat down and wrote this song.

The use of depleted uranium is a crime against humanity and our current Australian government condones It with the granting of leases for America to test their weapons on Australian soil. What has become known as Gulf war syndrome is poisoning from depleted uranium. A must see is David Bradbury’s film ‘Blowin In The Wind’.
I  went to the gallery, saw your photo on the wall
The faces of youth, reflections of war
How many daughters and how many sons
Must bear the price for oil to a false saviour's drum

For some it's just beginning, the day it all ends
As the radioactivity creeps under their skin
This modern technology, a victor's disdain
Who really is the terrorist in this westerner's shame

Are you trapped in your hatred, are you seeking revenge
To appease your corporations, where will this madness end
A poor man is a rich man, but a rich man is poor
And when he can't see the darkness there's no difference at all

As I looked at the photos and the terror in those eyes
Blood spilt from arrogance, deceit, egos, lies
When young ones are the victims, pawns in your shame
It's a false fight for freedom when children bear the pain

So don't tell me time will heal the scars left behind
'Cause the hatred and suffering will amplify with time
And fire back to haunt you, a perpetrator's seed
And avenge all this bigotry and religious decree

Are you trapped in your hatred, are you seeking revenge
To appease your corporations, where will this madness end
A poor man is a rich man, but a rich man is poor
And when he can't see the darkness there's no difference at all

How many generations must it take to believe
War is extension of politician's greed
And how many deaths will it take to justify
To see the torment and anguish etched in their eyes

So as you make you grand decisions, you masters of the game
Perhaps one day your children will hang here the same
And I hope then you realise the folly that you spread
An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth, will only rebound in the end

Are you trapped in your hatred, are you seeking revenge
To appease your corporations, where will this madness end
A poor man is a rich man, but a rich man is poor
And when he can't see the darkness there's no difference at all

Are you trapped in your hatred, are you seeking revenge
To appease your corporations, where will this madness end
When young ones are the victims, pawns in your shame
It's a false fight for freedom when children bear the pain
It's a false, it's a false fight for freedom
