La Spedizione Punitiva, o Messico nostro, il ventitré febbraio | The Punitive Expedition |
Messico nostro, il ventitré febbraio | In our Mexico, on the 23rd of February, |
Carranza lasciò passar gli americani: | Carranza let the Americans go across. |
Duemila soldati, trecento aeroplani, | Two thousand men and 300 airplanes, |
Cercando Villa per tutto il paese. | looking for Villa throughout the countryside. |
Cominciarono a mandare spedizioni, | The expeditionary searches began, |
Gli aeroplani cominciarono a volare | and airplanes started to fly. |
In distinte e varie direzioni, | They went in many different directions, |
Cercando Villa, lo volevano ammazzare. | looking for Villa, with plans to kill him. |
I soldati che venivano dal Texas | But the soldiers who came from Texas |
Già stufi di otto ore di cammino | and fed up after eight hours on the road, |
Quei poveretti se ne volevano tornare. | the poor things wanted to return. |
I cavalieri non ce la facevano a stare in sella | The cavalrymen couldn't sit down |
E i fanti non ce la facevano a camminare, | and the infantrymen couldn't walk. |
E allora Villa li passa col suo aeroplano | Then Villa flew over on his airplane |
E da lassù gli urla: “Good-bye!” | and from above he yells: "Good-bye!" |
Quando seppero che Villa era morto | When they believed Villa was dead, t |
Tutti gridavano, in preda al furore: | hey shouted in frenzy: |
“Ora sì, miei cari compagni, | "Now, dear comrades, |
Andiamo in Texas ricoperti d'onore.” | we can go back to Texas covered with honor!" |
Ma non sapevano che Villa era vivo, | But they didn't know Villa was still alive |
E che con lui non ce l'avrebbero mai fatta, | and could never be defeated. |
E se volevano fargli una visitina | And if they wished to visit him, |
Potevano andar lassù sui monti a vederlo. | they should go up to the mountains and see him. |
Cominciarono a mandare gli aeroplani, | When they sent their airplanes, |
Si vestì da soldato americano | He dressed as an American soldier |
| and also disguised his troops. |
Ma quando i Gringos videro le bandiere | When the gringos saw the flags |
Con tante strisce che Villa ci aveva dipinto sopra, | with the stripes that Villa had painted, |
Scesero giù con ogni cosa e con gli aeroplani | they came down in their planes |
E Pancho Villa li fece prigionieri. | and Pancho Villa took them prisoner. |
Tutta la gente di Chihuahua e Ciudad Juárez | The people in Chihuahua and Ciudad Juarez |
Si esterrefece ed anche si spaventò | were frightened and amazed |
Di vedere tanti Gringos e Carranzisti | to see so many gringos and Carranza soldiers |
[1] | that Villa left without ears. |
Che avran pensato tutti quei bianchi mollicci coi piedoni, [2] | What did those "big feet" think? |
Forse che ci avrebbero spaventati coi cannoni? | That cannons would frighten us? |
Loro ci avran pure aeroplani a carrettate, | They may have loads of airplanes, |
| but over here we have what really counts! |
