Se si dovesse selezionare una frase, un giudizio, una “sentenza” comune a tutte le canzoni contro la guerra scritte e cantate, diciamo, negli ultimi tremila anni in ogni paese e in ogni lingua del mondo, questa è senz’altro: “Sembra scritta appena ieri”. Non passano mai di moda, le canzoni contro la guerra: riflettono considerazioni, osservazioni e meccanismi antichi quanto la Terra. Lo si potrebbe naturalmente dire anche per questa canzone olandese, scritta “soltanto” centocinque anni fa, quasi al termine della I guerra mondiale, la “Grande Guerra” che avrebbe dovuto, naturalmente, far finire tutte le altre. Certo, cambiano i nomi, ci son quelli di moda allora come Lloyd George e il Kaiser; ma la sostanza non cambia di una virgola.

Stupenda canzone d’altri tempi griffata da Tony Canto e Kaballà per il messinese Salvatore Muschio, in arte Turè Muschio. «La canzone è ispirata al “Diario di un disertore” di Bruno Misefari un anarchico di Reggio Calabria che racconta in prima persona la sua avventurosa e dolorosa storia di diserzione dalla Grande Guerra del ‘15-‘18», spiega Pippo “Kaballà” Rinaldi.

«Anche noi abbiamo, finalmente, come la Francia ha avuto Boris Vian, la nostra canzone dedicata a chi diserta la guerra», aggiunge il cantautore di Brolo. «Ma anche i disertori in tempo di pace, i poeti, gli scrittori, le anime pure sono senza patria anche se “dopo la gloria” le patrie si faranno vanto di loro». Completa Tony Canto, che è anche il produttore del progetto: «Canta anche la diserzione dai valori. Prima la canzone era estetica ed etica, tendeva ad avere un contenuto etico. Oggi la musica è solo estetica. Noi torniamo all’antico».

Same Again Tomorrow

Rich had been working on a song focused on the fighting 69th regiment. I loved the reference to their bravery during the Civil War, and loved the use of their battle cry. I wanted to add more to their story. The 69th has been a part of almost every conflict since the Civil War. I referenced a poem called the Rogue Bouquet by Joyce Kilmer. Sadly he was killed during the battle of Rogue Bouquet Wood during WWI. His Poem was read during the funeral of the fallen soldiers in France. -Brendan

I was exploring Gettysburg with my family and came across the Irish Brigade Monument. I'd heard about the "Fighting 69th" but did some more reading. I was able to knock out the first verse and chorus pretty quickly, and turned to Brendan to flesh out the rest. -Rich

Gavrilo Princip nacque a Obljaj , un villaggio bosniaco prossimo al confine con la Croazia. Studiò a Belgrado dove venne a contatto con elementi dell’ultranazionalismo serbo. Fu membro del gruppo Giovane Bosnia (cfr. i paragrafi successivi e le note biografiche). A diciannove anni fu l’esecutore materiale dell’attentato all’arciduca Francesco Ferdinando, erede al trono asburgico, il 28 Giugno 1914 a Sarajevo. Francesco Ferdinando rimase ucciso insieme alla moglie Sofia.
Princip morì affetto da tubercolosi, una mano amputata, in pessime condizioni di salute, pare anche maltrattato, nel carcere ceco di Terezin ( allora Theresienstad)... (continua)

Brano conosciuto anche con altri titoli (Alpini in montagna, Al comando dei nostri ufficiali) la cui prima esecuzione accertata risale al 1897: in questa prima versione, aveva un carattere patriottico-celebrativo. La melodia riprendeva un modulo musicale ampiamente utilizzato dai cantastorie dell’Italia settentrionale nei decenni precedenti il conflitto ed era comune a un altro canto diffuso in diverse varianti nella pianura padana, che durante la guerra assunse un significato di dissenso e protesta: Addio padre e madre addio. La melodia è anche la stessa, semplificata, di O Venezia che sei la più bella, diffusa nel 1850 a ricordo della sanguinosa repressione austriaca dei moti veneziani del 1848. Dalla raccolta di Gian Luigi Beccaria nelle Langhe proviene un altro testo inedito, assai interessante. Noi non vogliamo più fare il militare è un canto registrato a Dogliani da un certo Andrea Borra, di cui non si conoscono i dati biografici, ma che probabilmente era un militante dell'idea socialista o anarchica.

Un testo collocabile negli ultimi anni di guerra, certamente dopo la Rivoluzione d'Ottobre.

Caporetto, 24 ottobre 1917 : non un episodio di vigliaccheria ma la rivolta dei fanti contadini, il proletariato dell'esercito come li ha chiamati Curzio Malaparte, i figli di troia come li chiamavano alcuni ufficiali.
Stanchi di marcire nelle buche fangose, rosi dai pidocchi, stanchi di uccidere e farsi uccidere da poveri come loro.
Una rivolta che nessuno ha voluto o saputo guidare.

L'autore del testo della canzone è sconosciuto. Secondo il sito belga Wreed en Plezant (dal quale riprendo il testo, e che è un'autentica miniera di canzoni pacifiste e antimilitariste belghe in lingua neerlandese), il testo sarebbe stato pubblicato nel volume Volksche Oorlogsliederen verzameld door Leon Defraye (“Canzoni popolari di guerra raccolte da Leon Defraye”) e, a sua volta, in Marktliederen over de Groote Oorlog di Roger Hessel (2011). Con marktlied si indica, nella tradizione fiamminga, una canzone cantata da cantastorie o cantanti popolari durante fiere, mercati, ecc. Come autore della musica viene indicato “R. De Decker”, ma non si sa se si tratti di Rufijn De Decker, un abbastanza celebre compositore nativo della città di Ninove, nelle Fiandre Occidentali. Appare abbastanza... (continua)

1917

1917 was written largely about the Battle of Passchendaele fought between July and December 1917 in some of the worst conditions of the whole war, and described by Lloyd George as "one of the greatest disasters of the war ... No soldier of any intelligence now defends this senseless campaign ..."

The song also references the changing political situations, the Russian Revolution and French army mutiny, as well as the less well known British mutiny at Étaples.

Finally 1917 addresses the executions of 306 British and Commonwealth soldiers in World War One, many of whom were suffering from shell shock and unfairly branded cowards. There is a little nod to Magnum's superb song on the subject Les Morts Dansant in the lyrics.

1916 was written about the Battle of the Somme which was fought between 1st July and 18th November 1916 and was the largest battle of the Great War fought on the Western Front. More than one million men were killed or wounded during the battle, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history…

1915 has been released on the centenary of the first use by British forces of gas as a weapon of war at the Battle of Loos. The horrific effects of gas warfare was immortalised in Wilfred Owen's poem Dulce et Decorum est, which is referenced in this song.

Born to Irish parents in Fulham in 1895, Edward Dwyer joined the East Surrey Regiment at the age of 16. When war broke out he served in the Retreat from Mons, the first battle fought by the British Army against the Germans. After his heroic grenade defence of a trench on Hill 60 just outside Ypres in April 1915, he became (at the time) the youngest person to be awarded the Victoria Cross.

The following year, recuperating from injuries back in England, Dwyer made a sound recording on the Regal label. It is thought to be the only such recording of a serving British soldier during World War I. In less than six minutes he talks about life at the front, pay and rations and so forth. He observes that, to keep their spirits up, the troops sang songs with their own rewritten lyrics.

Sotto il ponte alla Carraia, che è nel centro storico di Firenze, non ci passano né il Piave (quello che mormorava il 24 maggio 1915) né il Tagliamento; ci passa l'Arno, fin dal 1218 quando fu costruito per la prima volta sotto il nome di "Ponte Nuovo", perché fu il secondo ponte ad esser costruito sull'Arno a Firenze dopo il vecchio ponte romano. L'Arno, quindi, ci passava anche negli anni della “Grande Guerra”, vale a dire il periodo a cui deve risalire questa semplice strofa nella quale una donna fiorentina, una moglie, si rivolge al marito al fronte. Non si sa su quale musica fosse intonata, e nemmeno se una musica ce l'avesse per davvero. E' una strofa d'amore, ma estremamente pratica: nessuno sdilinquimento, nessun “soldato innamorato”, ma una dichiarazione di soccorso, di aiuto, di una moglie al marito. Una drammatica realtà quella di chi, in ogni tempo, ha rifiutato di alzare il braccio contro il fratello pagando con la vita la propria determinazione o la propria natura umana.
Nel paese, l'Italia, che unica in Europa continua a rifiutare la riabilitazione della memoria dei disertori e che continua a sostenere la retorica insanguinata delle bandiere al vento e dei sacrari militari, sosteniamo che - parafrasando De André in una diversa occasione - "a loro andrebbe consegnato il Nobel per la Pace".
