Non frequento sale cinematografiche da decenni e non avendo praticamente mai posseduto un televisore, le mie conoscenza in materia di film sono sicuramente scarse e datate. Risalgono alla fine dei sessanta e ai primi settanta la maggior parte dei miei ricordi cinematografici. Oltre a qualche pellicola precedente, degli anni cinquanta, vista da bambino nel cinema parrocchiale di Debba (tra cui “Il massacro di Fort Apache” - per Domenico Buffarini forse il primo esempio di una pellicola non apertamente razzista con i “pellerossa”). These lyrics have been written by an unknown Finnish-American author, propably a Wobbly, i.e. a member of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), or »tuplajuulainen« (a double-u'er) as the Finnish Wobblies used to call themselves. This is clearly shown by the word »skääppi«, a Finglish equivalent of the English word scab. And scabs are what this version of the song is all about.
This Finnish-American Wobbly version of the song by an unknown author was first published in 1918 in Proletaari Lauluja (Proletarian Songs, Workers Socialist Publishing Company, Duluth, Minnesota). According to Ilpo Saunio & Timo Tuovinen’s book Edestä aattehen - suomalaisia työväenlauluja 1890 - 1938 (For the Cause - Finnish Working Class Songs 1890 - 1938, Tammi Publishing Company, Helsinki 1978), its lyricist is unknown suggesting that the Finnish music archive records crediting the almost identical lyrics of the above version (Proletaarit nouskaa) from 1928 to Hannes Saari may not be correct.
This Finnish-American translation by an unknown author was first published in 1918 in Proletaari Lauluja (Proletarian Songs, Workers Socialist Publishing Company, Duluth, Minnesota). Interestingly, the title Puupää (blockhead) refers rather to Joe Hill's Mr. Block ) than this song.

It seems likely that this song is about the struggle of the American laborer and the working class in industrialized society.

John Henry is a folk hero who is famous for his race against a steam-powered hammer, in which he raced a machine with his hammer to see who could dig a tunnel faster. While he won the race, he died of exhaustion immediately after. John Henry is often used as a symbol for the role of humans in industrialized/mechanized society. He is likely used here to symbolize the degraded worth of a human worker in a machine-based society.
