Deux rébus enfantins... Celui-ci, celui-ci... Si tu les comptes, tu verras qu'ils sont cinq et que le dernier se distingue des autres... Et bien, ce sont les cinq doigts de la main qui servent à domestiquer l'enfant dans une gestuelle expressive et hypnotique. Ce sont eux qui reviennent ici. "Scott Walker’s passionate leftist political beliefs had been no secret by the time “The Old Man’s Back Again” was written and recorded, but the event which prompted one of his most pointed songs found him tackling not a right-wing dictatorship (as he later would with “The Electrician”) but a left-wing one. The subtitle – “Dedicated to the Neo-Stalinist Regime”) specifically refers to the repressive Czech government that overthrew the Prague Spring era in 1968 with Soviet military help, the ‘old man’ himself being the ghost of Stalin returned to a horrific new life. “The Old Man’s Back Again” found Walker blending a symbolic lyric of destruction and death with a striking combination of rumbling, prominent funk bass and a post- Ennio Morricone western-orchestral arrangement, stabbing strings courtesy Peter Knight and mournful, almost Russian chorale-tinged wordless... But had developed airs and graces and a posh accent and kind of saw herself as being of the upper classes, which she wasn't. So it was sort of a false accent, and a false attitude that went with it. Questo singolo degli S*M*A*S*H fu posto in vendita per un giorno soltanto, poi la censura ne decretò il ritiro dai negozi. Raggiunse comunque la posizione n.26 nella UK single chart...

Attualizzerei l'elenco dei personaggi da "far fuori" che gli inglesi S*M*A*S*H facevano nel 1994 con un noto criminale di guerra di casa loro, Tony "Bliar", quella faccia di cazzo dell'ex premier labourista che davanti alla commissione d'inchiesta sulla guerra all'Iraq ha detto: "onestamente, lo rifarei di nuovo" e "ne sento la responsabilità ma non il rimorso"...

"Gli S.M.A.S.H. nella grafica del nome si rifacevano al titolo del famoso film MASH di Robert Altman da cui poi fu tratto un telefilm di grande classe. Tra una lettera del nome e l’altra c’era una stellina. Il gruppo nasce nei primi anni novanta nel bel mezzo del nulla, a Welwyn Garden nell’Hertfordshire. Nel 1994 pubblica... (continua)

La canzone è dedicata a Bobby Seale, fondatore delle BP con Huey P. Newton. Nel 1968 Bobby Seal fu l’ottavo dei cosiddetti “Chicago Seven”, i militanti radicali (in testa a tutti Abbie Hoffman) imputati di cospirazione e incitamento alla ribellione per i disordini scoppiati durante la convention del partito democratico. Ma la posizione di Seale fu stralciata perché leader delle BP e perché subito si scagliò contro il giudice chiamandolo “cane fascista”, “porco” e “razzista”… la giustizia decise quindi di riservargli un trattamento “di riguardo”… A questo si aggiunse l’accusa – mai dimostrata – di essere il mandante del brutale omicidio di Alex Rackley, un presunto infiltrato dela polizia nel movimento…

Inspired and based-on Terry Whitmore's book "Memphis-Nam-Sweden". Terry Whitmore was a black GI who deserted the Vietnam War after being injured in a fire-fight. He denounced the American government strongly afterwards for it's racism and arrogance to invade a country to "liberate" it while blacks and others in the U.S. were being oppressed and murdered. He became a symbol in Europe of the American GI anti-war movement and the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who followed a similar path during what the Vietnamese call the "American War".

The ending can be seen as happy ending or a sad ending depending on your point of view. I prefer a sad ending. This is a song I wrote in 1993. I have recently come back to it and rewritten it changing the chords, structure and half of the lyrics. I added some harmonica to it towards the end too. I am much happier with this song now."

Seventy Virgins refers to the fantasy that suicide bombers believe, that they will be martyrs, greeted in Heaven by 70 virgins. The song lays out the crisis in the Middle East and how all sides base their actions on some sort of fantasy.
The song was written after seeing Pakistani rock band, Junoon. They're known all over the world for their activism for peace between India and Pakistan and are speaking out on the issues of the post Sept. 11 situation.

I grew up like all my generation in a world in which the possibility of an all-out nuclear war between the USA and Russia seemed like a real possibility. The Cuban missile crisis – Dr. Strangelove – fallout shelters. I wrote several songs around these nightmare themes, but this one seemed to sum up the madness best. It may seem a little less likely now - but the weapons are still there and are still just as dangerous. And they are in more hands than ever and growing. This is no time to be complacent and this song is still relevant. Georges Brassens, d'ailleurs, se plaisait à chanter un refrain qui n'était pas de lui ( mais de W.Heyman-J.Boyer) - et qui disait : « Avoir un bon copain / Voilà ce qu'il y a de meilleur au monde... » ( il n'y a d'ailleurs pas grand chose de plus dans cette savonnette)... Donc, fermons la parenthèse, et découvrons ensemble cette canzone que je viens de terminer et qui sort tout droit de la méditation du prisonnier. Come Follow the Drinking Gourd e Go down, Moses, una canzone dedicata alla cosiddetta “Underground Railroad”, la rete di cammini e case di accoglienza segrete che nella prima metà dell’800 consentì a decine di migliaia di schiavi afroamericani di mettersi in salvo negli Stati liberi del nord e nel Canada. La “regina” della “Ferrovia Sotteranea” fu Harriet Tubman, una schiava del Maryland che, dopo essere stata quasi uccisa dal proprio padrone bianco, fuggì e dedicò la vita a far fuggire altri schiavi. Sulla sua testa fu pure posta una taglia, ma non la presero mai. Morì quasi centenaria nel 1913.

Nel 1977 Eddie Carthan fu il primo afroamericano a diventare sindaco di Tchula, Mississippi.
A Tchula il 90% della popolazione era nera, ma la minoranza bianca imponeva da sempre la segregazione. Carthan non si fece intimidire dai “landlords” e dai loro sgherri del KKK e avviò un coraggioso ed avanzato piano di superamento della segregazione razziale e di miglioramento della qualità di vita della comunità nera. I bianchi gliela giurarono, e fin dal suo insediamento lo boicottarono e intimidirono, un vero linciaggio politico che si concluse nel 1981 con una falsa accusa di aggressione ad un poliziotto: Carthan fu costretto a dimettersi per sostenere il processo, dove fu condannato a tre anni di carcere. Per fortuna, dopo soli otto mesi, la pena fu revocata perché era evidente che si era trattato di un giudizio farsa e che Carthan era assolutamente estraneo ai fatti imputatigli.
