You could call it a protest song — really, you could say the same of any closing cut called “Peace and Love” with a na-na-na chorus — but all she’s protesting for is her own continued relevance. “I’m in it to win,” she sings, and she means only herself, and she means there’s a loser; she knows there are stakes. Her “rap” is too brusque, and that would-be anthemic chorus is too pressed and dips into too sardonic an alto to galvanize anyone else.

Si tratta di un outtake dell'album "The Times They Are A-Changin'" presente nei seguenti dischi:
"Witmark Demos", New York, December 1962 - June 1964, Off Beat Records;
"Broadside Ballads, Vol. 3: The Broadside Singers", Folkways Records, 1964;
"The Bootleg Series Volumes 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased) 1961–1991", Columbia, 1991;
Colonna sonora del film "North Country", regia di Niki Caro (2005). "Paths of Victory" è qui offerta nella versione resa da Cat Power (che – tra parentesi – mi fa abbastanza cacare...).
Una canzone sulla incessante lotta di una parte del genere umano per un mondo più giusto e più libero. Secondo me, non meno potente di A Change Is Gonna Come o di We Shall Not Be Moved o di We Shall Overcome...
Ma la versione cui Dylan stesso è forse più legato non è sua, ma di Odetta, in "Odetta Sings Dylan", RCA, 1965: "Fu Odetta ad accendere veramente il mio interesse... (continua)
