Secondo alcuni critici si tratterebbe oltre tutto di uno dei primissimi brani musicali ascrivibili al rock psichedelico...
Per la versione di Jeff Beck non parlerei di una cover, visto che il chitarrista era tra i membri degli Yardbirds, scioltisi già nel 1968, insieme ad una altro mostro sacro della 6 (e +) corde: Jimmy Page.
Altri che ci hanno provato: David Bowie, Jeff Healey Band, Gary Moore, Nazareth, Rush, Scorpions e molti ancora...

Album “Moving Pictures”
Terza di un ciclo di quattro canzoni intitolato “Fear Series”, sorto dalla cinica e pessimistica ma (almeno in parte) vera considerazione che la vita dell’uomo non è guidata dall’amore o dalla ragione, ma nemmeno dal denaro o dalla ricerca della felicità… L’uomo ed il mondo di cui egli è sovrano sono dominati soltanto dalla paura, la paura che è in lui, la paura che altri usano contro di lui, la paura che lo muove nei confronti degli altri.
I primi tre brani di “Fear Series” sono curiosamente intitolati con un progressivo a ritroso, dove “The Enemy Within” è del 1984, “The Weapon” del 1982 e “Witch Hunt” del 1981… Il quarto brano, quello conclusivo intitolato “Freeze”, è invece piuttosto recente, dall’album “Vapor Trails” del 2002, ma ha a che vedere piuttosto con una vicenda personale, quella del batterista Neil Peart che alla fine dei 90 improvvisamente... “The main theme of the song is a series of things, but that's certainly one of the idea[s], and living in the, living in the modern world basically in all of its manifestations in terms of the distance from us of uh, the threat of superpowers and the, uh, the nuclear annihilation and all of that stuff, and these giant missiles pointed at each other across the ocean. There's all of that, but that tends to have a little bit of distance from people's lives, but at the same time I think it is omnipresent, you know, I think that threat does loom somewhere in everyone's subconscious, perhaps. Manhattan Project
"Manhattan Project" is a 1985 song by Canadian progressive rock band Rush named for the WWII project that created the first Atomic Bomb.
