"I am the light of the world," said Jesus. A song with religious overtones which is also used a great deal in churches. Sometimes it shines through that I come from Jönköping county. The lyrics were written after the murder of Olof Palme."

Natten
Prime Minister Olof Palme lead the Social Democratic party in Sweden from 1969 until his assassination (February 28, 1986). He was killed on Sveavägen, one of the main streets in Stockholm. The you tube video shows powerful images from that tragic event.
The lyrics of "Natten" were written by Mikael Wiehe and the music is by Björn Afzelius. The song is on the album Björn Afzelius & Mikael Wiehe (1986)
On Mikael Wiehe's website he commented in "Sångerna," 2002":
My husband and I were on sabbatical in Stockholm when this terrible event took place. Several nights before the murder, we had been to the same movie theatre to see "The Mozart Brothers" film by Suzanne Osten. The feeling in Stockholm that next day when we all read the huge headlines, was similar to when President Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
The lyrics of "Natten" were written by Mikael Wiehe and the music is by Björn Afzelius. The song is on the album Björn Afzelius & Mikael Wiehe (1986)

Chi la dura la vince... o quasi.
Questa canzone era rimasta così in sospeso, senza un file audio a cui potersi riferire. E allora la cosa più logica era rivolgersi direttamente alla fonte: ho chiesto a Jim Krause, (in realtà i musicisti americani di nome Jim Krause sono ben 2, e ,sì, l'ho chiesto anche a quello sbagliato), che mi ha risposto che essendo la Alferd Packers Memorial String Band ancora in attività avrei dovuto chiedere a loro. Così ho fatto e con grandissima disponibilità e rapidità mi ha risposto Steve Mason, che non posso che ringraziare calorosamente, e mi hanno fatto avere il file audio che dovrebbero prossimamente inserire anche sul loro sito.
Da lì la strada è stata (quasi) tutta in discesa: la canzone, come del resto indicato anche sul retro dell'album, è composta da ben 6 strofe, di cui le tre di Charlie Poole e solo le ultime 3 di Jim Krause. Al momento ce ne manca ancora una, di difficilissima comprensione, ma ho chiesto aiuto anche su questo.

José Mendes da Silva è vissuto in una favela di Rio de Janeiro, o Morro do Pau da Bandeira. Credo di mestiere abbia fatto il vigile urbano, ma andò in pensione molto presto per via del suo stato di salute. Soffriva infatti di una malattia che gli causava grossi lividi sul corpo, tanto da meritarsi il suo soprannome, Zé do Caroço, dove caroço sta per livido, botta.
Ma per tutta la vita – è morto nel 2000 - Zé do Caroço le botte le prese soprattutto dalla polizia, perchè lui dalla sua casa del Morro do Pau da Bandeira conduceva una personale ed originale battaglia contro la dittatura e per svegliare la coscienza della sua gente, addormentata dalla repressione e dalle telenovelas. Hoola Bandoola Band började som en ganska (av mig) toppstyrd orkester – en fortsättning på alla de pop- och jazzband som vi alla tidigare hade spelat i. Så småningom blev vi - påverkade av tidens ideal och idéer - en ganska demokratiskt fungerande grupp där "alla" helst skulle kunna "allt". En av följderna var att Björn Afzelius började skriva musik. Juanita var en av de första av hans sånger som bandet spelade. Sången blev (och är fortfarande) en bautahit i Danmark. När jag åtta år senare mötte den nyvalde palestinske presidenten, Yasser Arafat i Stockholm, tackade han mej personligen för min insats i Aten den gången. Få statsmän har ett bättre minne för detlaljer än Arafat"

Il mio contributo al nuovissimo percorso sui Liberi Uccelli è questa cavalcata psichedelica dei Jefferson Airplane uscita dalla penna e dalla voce straordinaria di Grace Slick.
Aerie è il nido dell'aquila, qui presa a simbolo di libertà assoluta, senza legge, senza padrone, mentre gli umani non possono volare e non possono stare senza un fucile a portata di mano.
La canzone era anche la sigla di Perdido en el siglo, un mitico programma di Controradio Firenze condotto, non a caso, da Aquila DJ. Nonostante il titolo manuchaesco la programmazione musicale era incentrata sul rock anni '60 e '70 e sulla psichedelia. Non so che fine ha fatto Aquila, mi piacerebbe incontrarlo alla FLOG con l'immancabile birrino in mano, ad ascoltare un bel blues e brindare insieme alla libertà.

La ritengo l'emblema di cosa significhi lavorare in una band. Dei problemi, delle contraddizioni che riserva. Chiunque abbia avuto un gruppo musicale, sa.
È chiaramente un brano apologetico dell'Occidente a stelle e strisce, contro la grigia, afona e retrograda parte orientale, qui la RDT. L'io narrante è un giovane al suo fine settimana, con tanta voglia di "mare e vele", di avventure, "di poter gridare", delle discoteche e delle "cento bocche che respirano su e giù" della luccicante parte di là.
Ma non è che tutto questo sia scritto in ottica critica.

Questa canzone è dedicata ai cosiddetti "Zazous", i giovani swingers francesi che, come gli omologhi tedeschi della Swingjugend, negli anni dell'ultima guerra furono perseguitati dai regimi, perchè la loro condotta anarcoide, gaudente e scanzonata non si addiceva all'ordine costituito, e bollati dalla Resistenza come codardi menefreghisti, quando non come collaborazionisti, per la loro attitudine apolitica benchè antiautoritaria.
