Propongo questo brano per commentare l'escalation guerrafondaia con cui nel giro di pochi giorni The Donald è riuscito a sfrucugliare sia il vespaio mediorientale che quello nordcoreano a suon di Tomahawk e Mother Of All Bombs (MOAB).

Non penso che Kim Jong-un e Putin siano rimasti più impressionati di tanto dalla prova di forza americana ma adesso inevitabilmente partirà la gara a chi ce l'ha più grosso e più lungo. E quanto a missilozzi e bombacce varie ai due signori di cui sopra non glielo mette in culo nessuno. Parlando anche solo di ordigni convenzionali, se quel cowboy di Trump c'ha la MOAB, quel kazzuto di Putin c'ha il FOAB, il Father Of All Bombs, quattro volte più potente.

La musica di questo brano – e, credo, dell'intera produzione dei Virus, ma non voglio nemmeno provare ad approfondire – è per me inascoltabile e disturbante. Ma, dal punto di vista testuale, la canzone è significativa e, forzandone l'interpretazione, in qualche modo profetica, visto che nel febbraio del 2011, quando uscì l'album in cui è contenuta, in Siria c'era la “primavera araba” che solo alla fine dell'anno si sarebbe trasformata nel lungo inverno/inferno della guerra cui stiamo ancora oggi assistendo...

I wanted the album to end with a plea. Oiseau, written the day after the 2015 Paris attacks while I was on tour in Tunisia, describes a sleeping man caught in a nightmare of terrorist violence . In it, he hears the hollow thud of bullets, of bombs exploding, of bodies falling. From the darkness of his dream, he calls to a songbird outside his window to wake him from the nightmare. He begs the bird to sing to him, to bring him back to the light, to wake him with song. Music is his only hope.

"Drone” riconduce l’album all’attualità di un attacco di droni in Siria.

Although I Dreamed An Island is inspired by the lost multi-cultural idyll of 12th century Norman Sicily, I wanted the album to flow, both musically and narratively between the past and the contemporary. Drone, as its title suggests, brings us back to the present day where silent unmanned aircraft have replaced the dagger and sword and the thunder of galloping horses as the new messengers of death, wreaking havoc in the night. The song describes the aftermath of a drone strike in Syria.

Certo, si tratta di una canzone di propaganda pro ribelli, ma non così fortemente anti britannica, piuttosto un appello per il riconoscimento dell'indipendenza, la fine della guerra fratricida e la pace che sola può garantire la prosperità.

Mary Harris “Mother” Jones (1837 – 30 November 1930) was an Irish-born American schoolteacher and dressmaker who became a prominent labor and community organizer. She helped coordinate major strikes and cofounded the Industrial Workers of the World.

Jones worked as a teacher and dressmaker, but after her husband and four children all died of yellow fever in 1867 and her dress shop was destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, she began working as an organizer for the Knights of Labor and the United Mine Workers union. From 1897, at about 60 years of age, she was known as Mother Jones. In 1902 she was called “the most dangerous woman in America” for her success in organizing mine workers and their families against the mine owners. In 1903, to protest the lax enforcement of the child labor laws in the Pennsylvania mines and silk mills, she organized a children’s march from Philadelphia to the home of President Theodore Roosevelt in New York.
