Mon album tourne autour des rapports humains. L’exil, par exemple, avec la chanson Dessine-moi un pays, écrite pour ces gens qui s’agrippent aux avions qui partent de Kaboul lors du retour des Talibans. Mais aussi, parce que je ne peux souscrire aux discours de la peur qui se développent ici, pour créer un pays où l’on serait montré du doigt dès lors qu’on a une couleur différente du blanc.

Nella mattinata del 20 ottobre oltre duecento persone stavano manifestando in place de Luxembourg (nei pressi della sede della Commissione europea) a Bruxelles contro l’impiego di armi chimiche e gas tossici da parte della Turchia. Utilizzati, ça va sans dire, contro la Resistenza curda nel Bashur (il Kurdistan del Sud, dentro i confini iracheni). In questo periodo soprattutto nell’area montagnosa di Werxelê (regione curda di Avashîn).
Ma contro i manifestanti curdi è immediatamente scattata l’ordinaria repressione a base di lacrimogeni e manganellate.

Long before Bob Dylan, the 18’th century Scottish poet and song-writer Robert Burns published an anti-war anthem. Surprisingly modern sounding (video below), the song rejects contemporary war mongering and focuses on the human suffering caused by conflict. However, in order to understand the historical context of the song, we do need an expert. We asked George Mcclellan, a director of the Robert Burns Association of North America, to set the scene.

Sotto il profilo artistico può lasciare delle perplessità ma il suo valore documentario rimane, anche se Julian Assange ebbe a dire: "depicts me and my work in a negative light".

La storia è fin troppo nota. Gianluca Grignani, cantante pop sanremese che grazie alle canzonette del primo album (Destinazione paradiso, La mia storia tra le dita...) aveva conquistato le vette delle classifiche italiane e il cuore di fin troppe ragazzine pronte a idolatrare il belloccio di turno, con il suo secondo disco spiazza tutti.
La fabbrica di plastica è un disco ruvido, pieno di chitarre elettriche distorte, che musicalmente si rifà al grunge ma anche al brit-pop, che allora spopolava nella scena internazionale. Con un sound che sapeva unire il rock alla melodia (i detrattori dicono che sempre di canzonette si trattava, solo nascoste sotto un muro di chitarre elettriche) il ragazzo - allora appena ventiquattrenne - dimostra sicuramente di avere qualcosa da dire, al di là della classica canzone... ‘There Were Bells’ was written by Brian Eno for a performance by him and his brother Roger at UNESCO World Heritage site, the Acropolis in August 2021. It was 45 degrees in Athens on the day of the concert with wildfires raging just outside the city, prompting his introductory comment “I thought, here we are at the birthplace of Western civilization, probably witnessing the end of it.” There Were Bells is taken from Eno’s new album FOREVERANDEVERNOMORE and provides a poignant reminder of the current climate emergency, a theme that is explored throughout the record.

Avec toi, Vietnam
Belgium released protest record, probably late 1960s. The label was based in Schaerbeek, Région de Bruxelles-Capitale. The a-side "Le longue marche" is an anti-atomic, Cold War protest song, referencing the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima. The b-side was a protest against the Vietnam War, "Avec Toi, Vietnam" ("With You, Vietnam") (Selection Records # S 5062) with lyrics composed by Guy Decembre, and music by Remy Gillis, focused on the horrors of war and its impact on people, "crying, a mother... dying, a child... horror, misery... these waves of blood".

Canzone sarcastica cantata in inglese del cantante belga (di Antwerp) Ferre Grignard. Un hippie eccentrico, Grignard provò a trasferirsi negli USA ma fu espulso in quanto anarchico. Negli anni '70 visse in una sorta di comune hippie. Dimenticato dai fan e con gravi problemi economici, morì ancora giovane di cancro nel 1982.

The obscure psychedelic rock group Children of the Morning, formed in Italy, released the song "Hey America, America" which criticised the US government for the Kent State killings.
Shel Shapiro, who led the group, composed the song. He had previously played with the British beat group The Rokes (1950s-60s). The narrator questioned the validity / plausibility of the argument that the National Guard fired in self defense: "government pretends that it was self defense". The lyrics then suggested that the killings harmed the reputation of the US: "America you're fucking up", which could have repercussions: "hey America don't push you luck".
The song ended with a general anti-war message, complaining that the "war in Vietnam continues", in which the soldiers "kill woman and children".
