The Big Red Session

I've been glued to Al Jazeera for six weeks now, more than usual, captivated by events in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Jordan, and elsewhere. I wrote this on the plane from Honolulu to Portland. Feel free to go to http://www.davidrovics.com and click the "donate" button to help me make a better recording of this song if you're so inclined.

We're Stole and Sold From Africa

We're Stole and Sold From Africa
[~1850]
Lyrics and Music: anonymous

Addie's repertoire included several extremely common songs such as "We're Stole and Sold From Africa", an anti-slavery song which seems to have originated in the antebellum Abolitionist movement. She also sang a number of songs of African American origin, many of which she learned from black railroad builders..

Immigrant

Immigrant
[1999]
Lyrics & Music by John McCutcheon
Album: Supper's On The Table [2000]

[The chorus is based on the inscription on the base of the Statue of Liberty:]
Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

La der des der

Canzone française – La der des der – 1918 – Marco Valdo M.I. – 2011
Histoires d'Allemagne 17

Ah !,Lucien l'âne mon ami, dit Marco Valdo M.I.

Laz'rus

Laz'rus
[2002]
Lyrics & Music by John McCutcheon
Album: Stand Up! Broadsides For Our Times [2003]

When the nine coal miners were miraculously rescued after three days in a flooded mine outside of Somerset, PA, the vision of the biblical Lazarus was the first thing that came to mind. One of the unreported heroics of the rescue was the effort of the United Mine Workers over generations that forced the industry to have rescue technology and personnel trained and ready..

Canzone française – Alerte au gaz ! Gaaz ! Gaaaz ! – 1917 – Marco Valdo M.I. – 2011

(Continues)

In the Streets of Sarajevo

In the Streets of Sarajevo
[2001]
Lyrics & Music by John McCutcheon
Album: Stand Up! Broadsides For Our Times [2003]

John wrote this song a few years ago about Vedran Smailović, who was a resident of the city of Sarajevo in the early 1990's, when that city was literally in the middle of a battle zone. Vedran was a cello player whose courageous choice made him a symbol for unexpected joy in the midst of unspeakable horror when he began playing his cello out in the street everyday...

(Continues)
