"The Georgian Varšavjanka [Varshauli] was translated from the Russian original by I. Edošvili in 1901, according to a Russian article. But this text was published in the revolutionary songbook "რევოლუცის სიმღერები 1923" [revolutsis singherebi 1923, "Revolutionary songs"], in which the lyrics of many revolutionary songs, such as The Internationale and La Marseillaise, were written in Georgian." According to one Russian article, the Georgian version of "Варшавянка" was first written in 1901 by a Georgian communist, Irodion Evdošvili (იროდიონ ევდოშვილი, 1873-1916). Secondo le notizie che ho reperito in rete, scarse anche perché sono tutte in lingua georgiana che non è tra quelle che capisco meglio (per usare un eufemismo...) il canto è antichissimo e potrebbe risalire addirittura al IX secolo. In tempi recenti se ne ricorda l'esecuzione data da Hamlet Gonašvili (1928-1985), detto “La voce della Georgia”:
Appartiene a tutta quella serie di canti popolari (diffusi in tutta Europa fino alle sue estreme propaggini caucasiche) nei quali si chiedono a uccelli vari (in questo caso una “rondine nera”) notizie di guerrieri in battaglia; quasi invariabilmente, ad effettuare tale richiesta all'uccello è una donna (in questo caso una sorella). La struttura di tali canti è effettivamente molto antica, e in certi casi può risalire ad epoche addirittura anteriori al Medioevo.
