ERA UN GIORNO D'ESTATE | IT WAS A SUMMER'S DAY |
| |
Era un giorno d'estate, | It was a summer’s day, |
assolato e splendente, come sempre, | As always beautifully sunny, |
e la natura aveva in sé | And nature had within it |
una tale bellezza affascinante... | So much charm. |
Gli uccelletti cantavano | Birds were singing |
saltando allegri di qua e di là, | Cheerfully hopping around, |
e ci hanno ordinato di andare nel ghetto. | As we were ordered into the ghetto. |
| |
Oh, figuratevi che cosa ne è stato di noi! | Oh, imagine what became of us! |
Abbiamo capito: tutto era perduto. | We understood: all is lost, |
Non servì il nostro implorare | Our pleas were of no help |
che qualcuno ci aiutasse, | Asking for someone to rescue us, |
abbiamo abbandonato le nostre case. | We had deserted our home. |
| |
Eravamo troppi. | [...] We were too many - |
Il padrone ha ordinato | The master ordered |
di prendere gli ebrei del vicinato | Jews to be brought from the vicinity, |
e di fucilarli a Ponary. | And be shot at Ponar. |
Le case furono svuotate | The houses were emptied, |
e si riempirono le fosse. | But the ditches were filled. |
Il nemico aveva raggiunto il suo grande scopo. | The enemy had attained his desired goal. |
| |
A Ponary ora si vedono sulle strade | Now at Ponar one can see on the roads |
cose, cappelli inzuppati dalla pioggia. | Things, hats soaked by the rain. |
Sono gli oggetti delle vittime, | These are the belongings of the victims. |
delle anime sacre | Of the holy souls, |
che la terra ha ricoperto per sempre. | Which the earth has covered forever. |
| |
Ora di nuovo splende il sole, | And now, once more, it is beautifully sunny, |
tutt'intorno c'è un magnifico profumo, | A wonderful smell all around, |
e noi siamo in preda al dolore | And we are full of grief, |
e soffriamo in silenzio. | And we all suffer in silence. |
Tagliati fuori dal mondo, | Cut off from the world, |
nascosti da alti muri, | Hidden behind high walls, |
un barlume di speranza riluce appena. | A ray of hope barely stirs. |
