Versione francese di Claire Nikitina
PAPER SOLDIER

There was a soldier on this earth
Who could not be much bolder
But he was a toy for child’s mirth
For he was a paper soldier

To change the world that was his dream
So that joy for all would solder
But he hung above from a feeble string
For he was a paper soldier

For you he’d battle smoke and flames
Anytime he’d face the smolder
But you thought of him as just a game
For he was a paper soldier.

You would not trust him with a dime
With the pain that lade your shoulders
I ask you, “why?” and you reply,
“Cause he is a paper soldier.”

“To the flames? Hell! If you must!”
Then he took a brave step forward
And he burned himself to soot and dust
For he was a paper soldier.

UN SOLDAT EN PAPIER

C’est l’histoire d’un fantassin,
Vaillant et cavalier,
Il n’était qu’un simple pantin.
De plus, fabriqué en papier.

Aspirant à une idylle
Dans un monde pacifié,
Il était suspendu à un fil,
Et en plus, fabriqué en papier.

Pour vous, il se fût sacrifié,
Dans le feu et la fumée…
Vous ne fîtes que le railler,
Car il était fabriqué en papier.

Indigne de se faire confier
Vos secrets si bien gardés.
Il se sentit ignoré,
Vain, fabriqué en papier

Il maudissait son destin,
Sa vie si bien rangée.
Il demandait du feu
Oubliant qu’il était en papier.

Le feu ? Essaie seulement !
Il eut le courage d’oser
Et y brûla bêtement.
Lui, qui était en papier.
