A LA MUNTAGNA | UP THE MOUNTAINS |
| |
Quanno fa notte a la muntagna | When the night falls on the mountains |
tremma 'e paura la pecurella, | the little sheep trembles with fear |
si 'a vede 'o lupo se la magna. | if the wolf sees her, he ates her up |
| |
Pure p'o lupo 'a vita è dura | But life is hard for the wolf too |
quanno 'o pastore le dà la caccia | when the shepherd goes a-hunting |
e 'a pecurella dorme sicura. | and the little sheep sleeps safe. |
| |
'Ncopp'a muntagna 'o cchiù feroce | Up the mountains, the cruellest one |
mò nunn'è 'o lupo, è 'o brigante, | is not the wolf, but the outlaw. |
quanno 'o vedite, faciteve 'a croce. | When you see him, make the sign of the cross. |
| |
'Ncopp'a muntagna quanno fa scuro | Up the mountains, when the night falls |
pure 'o pastore mò nun trova pace, | the shepherd cannot live in peace, either, |
sente nu canto che fa paura: | when he hears a fearful song, |
songo 'e briganti ca se danno 'a voce. | it's the outlaws singing together. |
| |
E chi 'e cunosce, 'o ssape bbuono, | Those who know them know very well, |
ca nun l'è mai piaciuto 'o rre Burbone, | they've never liked the Bourbon king |
ma mò nun sape chest'ata storia | but now they don't know a different story: |
ca nun le piace manco 'o rre Savoia | they don't like either the Savoy king. |
| |
Se n'è fujuto 'o rre Burbone | The Bourbon king took to his heels, |
e n'è venuto n'ato cchiù putente: | a still more powerful king came instead: |
cagna 'o guverno, cagna 'o padrone, | governments change, rulers change |
sulo pe' chi stà 'a sotto nun cagna niente. | but nothing will change for the subjects. |
| |
Chi nun l'accetta sta legge nova | If one doesn't accept this new law |
a fare lu brigante ce fa la prova, | so he has to try and become an outlaw, |
ma si ce saglie 'ncopp'a muntagna | but if he goes up the mountains |
'a vita soja è comm'a na cundanna. | his life becomes a trial. |
| |
Contro 'e surdate 'e rre Vittorio | Against king Victor's soldiers |
mò c'è rimasto sulo sta paranza, | now there's only this band fighting |
ma nu brigante nun cagna 'a storia | but an outlaw cannot change history |
quanno cumbatte sulo, senza speranza. | when he fights alone and without hopes. |
| |
E quann'o pigliano 'ncopp'a muntagna | And when they catch him up the mountain |
more senza paura, senza rimpianto, | he dies without fear and without regret, |
e quanno 'e ppigliano dint'e paise | and when they catch them in the villages |
diceno: quann'e bello murire acciso. | they say: How beautiful dying slain. |
