POLESIA CZAR

Pośród łąk lasów i wód toni
W ciągłej pustej życia pogoni
Żyje posępny lud
Brzęczą much roje nad bagnami
Skrzypi jadący wóz czasami
Poprzez grząską rzekę wbród

Czasem ozwie się gdzieś łosia ryk
Albo gdzieś w głębi dziki głuszca krzyk
Potem znów cisza niczym niezmącona
Dusza śni pustką rozmarzona
Piękny o Polesiu sen

Polesia czar, to dzikie knieje, moczary
Polesia czar, to dziwny wichru jęk
Gdy w mroczną noc z bagien wstają opary
Serce me drży, dziwny ogarnia lęk
Słyszę jak w głębi wód jakaś skarga się miota
Serca prostota wierzy w Polesia czar

Tam, gdzie sędziwe szumią lasy
Kiedyś ujrzałam pełen krasy
Cudny Polesia kwiat
Słonko jaśniejsze mi się zdało
Wszystko w krąg nas się radowało
Śmiał się do nas cały świat

Próżno mi o Tobie dzisiaj śnić
Próżno w żalu i tęsknocie żyć
Nie wrócą chwile
Szczęścia niewysłowione drzemią
Wspomnienia pogrążone
W grotach poleskich kniej

Polesia czar...
THE CHARM OF POLESIA

Amongst meadows, forests and depths of water,
in a continuous, pointless pursuit of life,
there lives a gloomy folk.
Swarms of flies buzz over the swamps,
a cart creaks riding from time to time
and fording a slushy river.

Sometimes there can be heard a roar of elk
or wild shout of woodgrouse in a thicket,
then again silence so much immovable;
the soul dreams, made languorous by the emptiness,
a beautiful dream about Polesia…

The charm of Polesia are wild forests and marshlands.
The charm of Polesia is cheerless moaning of the wind.
While vapours stand up during dark night
the heart of mine trembles and is overtaken by strange anxiety,
so I hear, that in the depth of waters complaint is tossing,
the directness of heart belives in the miracle of Polesia.

There, where hoary forests swoosh,
I have seen once the full of beauty
marvelous bloom of Polesia.
Sun seemed to me more bright,
everything around us was glad,
the whole world laughed with us

It has been vainly for me to dream about you, girl,
vainly to live in sorrow and longing.
Moments of inexpressible hapiness won’t return,
the reminiscences doze deep
in the darkness of Polesian forests
