BALLADE VOM PREUSSISCHEN IKARUS | BALLADE OF THE PRUSSIAN ICARUS |
| |
Da, wo die Friedrichstraße sacht | See there where Friedrichstrasse ends, |
den Schritt über das Wasser macht | and curving o’er the water bends: |
da hängt über der Spree | there hangs over the Spree |
die Weidendammerbrücke. Schön | the Weidendammerbrücke fair, |
kannst du da Preußens Adler sehn | where Prussia’s eagle proudly glares |
wenn ich am Geländer steh. | and I lean at the rail. |
| |
dann steht da der preußische Ikarus | There stands the Prussian Icarus, |
mit grauen Flügeln aus Eisenguß | with wings of grey and an iron look, |
dem tun seine Arme so weh | his arms weighed down by his pride. |
er fliegt nicht weg - er stürzt nicht ab | He does not soar, nor does he fall, |
macht keinen Wind - und macht nicht schlapp | he’ll catch no wind, and give no call |
am Geländer über der Spree | at the handrail over the Spree. |
| |
Der Stacheldraht wächst langsam ein | The wire’s barbs grow in our breast |
tief in die Haut, in Brust und Bein | deep in our skin, in leg and chest; |
ins Hirn, in graue Zelln | its poison grips our minds. |
Umgürtet mit dem Drahtverband | Surrounded by this wire band, |
ist unser Land ein Inselland | has ours become a lonesome land |
umbrandet von bleiernen Welln | cut off by leaden waves? |
| |
da steht der preußische Ikarus | There stands the Prussian Icarus, |
mit grauen Flügeln aus Eisenguß | with wings of grey and an iron look, |
dem tun seine Arme so weh | his arms weighed down by his pride. |
er fliegt nicht hoch - und er stürzt nicht ab | He does not soar, nor does he fall, |
macht keinen Wind - und macht nicht schlapp | he’ll catch no wind, and give no call |
am Geländer über der Spree | at the handrail over the Spree. |
| |
Und wenn du wegwillst, mußt du gehn | And if you leave, you have to go. |
ich hab schon viele abhaun sehn | Some say they have no choice, you know, |
aus unserem halben Land | but flee our divided land. |
Ich halt mich fest hier, bis mich kalt | I’ll stay until I fall because |
dieser verhaßte Vogel krallt | that hated bird has deadly claws |
und zerrt mich übern Rand | that drag me to my end. |
| |
dann bin ich der preußische Ikarus | Then I will be Prussia’s Icarus |
mit grauen Flügeln aus Eisenguß | with iron wings and a captive look |
dann tun mir die Arme so weh | my shoulders will ache with deep pain. |
dann flieg ich hoch - dann stürz ich ab | I’ll try to fly, but tumble down. |
macht bißchen Wind - dann mach ich schlapp | Stir scare a wind, slump feebly down |
am Geländer über der Spree | at the handrail over the Spree. |
