BÉRMUNKÁS-BALLADA

Hordunk vinnyogó kosarat,
kapálunk reszkető salátát,
vályognak dagasztunk sarat,
szabjuk a divathölgy ruháját,
fejtjük a sertés-oldal háját,
zsírt olvasztunk, libát tömünk
s az est ha bontja lengő táját,
bérünk van, nincsen örömünk.

Hiába emelünk falat
és rakjuk sorsunk kaszárnyáját,
fiúnk uccán, üveg alatt
nézi csak építőkockáját
s ha lányunk babaruhácskáját
kéri - hisz szövetet szövünk -
összeszorítja puha száját -
bérünk van, nincsen örömünk.

Szemünk előtt csak szíj szalad,
csinálunk kocsit, hozzá pályát,
földben, föld fölött, föld alatt
elültetjük a világ fáját,
begyűjtjük a rét gabonáját
és még büszkék se lehetünk -
tűzbe vetik, vízbe dobálják.
Bérünk van, nincsen örömünk.

A krumpli úgy nő, ha kapálják!
Ott nincs hiba, hogy küzködünk,
nem az rágja az ember máját.
Bérünk van, nincsen örömünk.
A Wage-worker's Ballad

We carry the creaking basket,
We grow the quivering salad,
We mix mud and clay,
We sew garments for rich ladies,
We cut bacon off pork's hips,
We melt lard, we fatten geese;
And when the night flows all around,
There's no joy for us. Only a wage.

We build walls of no use
And the barracks of our fate,
Our son craves through the shop window
For the model construction toy,
And if our daughter asks for a little dress
For her doll, to us who do weaving work,
Her lips don't open to her longing;
There's no joy for us. Only a wage.

Before our eyes, only belts and pulleys
Run unendingly; we build train wagons,
In the earth, on the earth, under the earth
We plant the tree of the world,
We harvest the wheat from the soil
But we can't even be proud of this,
They burn it, they cast it into the water;
There's no joy for us. Only a wage.

Potatoes grow if we till the soil!
Well, we don't object to hard work,
We aren't annoyed by all this.
There's no joy for us. Only a wage.
