Mikis Theodorakis e Gail Holst [1] Gail Holst-Warhaft non è soltanto una apprezzata traduttrice dal greco. È docente dal 1990 alla Cornell University (NY) di Letteratura classica e comparata. È anche poetessa e musicista. Di origine australiana si è laureata ad Atene in Storia dell’Arte. In Grecia negli anni ’70 è stata giornalista e ha suonato il clavicembalo nelle orchestre di Theodorakis e Savvopoulos. Ha scritto parecchi saggi di successo, tra cui: Road to Rembetika: Music of Greek Sub-culture, Theodorakis: Myth and Politics in Modern Greek Music , Dangerous Voices: Women's Laments and Greek Literature , The Cue for Passion: Grief and its Political Uses. [2] Il nor-wester é un vento caldo che soffia da nord-ovest in Nuova Zelanda, assimilabile al föhn. La parola è stata scelta dalla traduttrice australiana per un pubblico anglosassone al quale libeccio non avrebbe evocato alcuna immagine di vento caldo e asfissia, prodromica all’ambientazione del suicidio nelle strofe successive. [1] γαρμπής [ garmbís ] : in gergo marinaro è il libeccio, vento di sudovest, dall’arabo غربي[ garbī ] / ovest
[2] Σταυρός του Νότου [ Stavrós tou Nótou ] : la Croce del Sud , costellazione visibile in tutto l’emisfero australe, riferimento per localizzare il Polo Sud
[3] Κομπολόι [ Kombolói ]: rosario senza funzione religiosa, un passatempo. Nel XIX secolo i grani erano di ambra e argento, era dotato di una nappa di seta. L’ uso iniziale nelle classi sociali elevate, soltanto dai maschi, si estese in seguito ai rebetes. I grani furono fabbricati in legno, vetro e poi in plastica, senza la nappa di seta.
[4] Άλφα του Κενταύρου [ Alfa tou Kentávrou ] : Alfa Centauri, stella della costellazione australe del Centauro. Molto brillante, consente di individuare facilmente la Croce del Sud.
[5] Nosy Be : Isola a nord-ovest del Madagascar, nel canale del Mozambico, grande una volta e mezzo l’Elba. In malgascio Nosy sta per isola e Be significa grande
