Als das Kind Kind war,	When the child was a child
ging es mit hängenden Armen,	It walked with its arms swinging.

nicht bloß der Schein einer Welt vor der Welt?	only the illusion of a world before the world?
Gibt es tatsächlich das Böse und Leute,	Does evil actually exist,
die wirklich die Bösen sind?	and are there people who are really evil?
Wie kann es sein, daß ich, der ich bin,	How can it be that I, who am I,
bevor ich wurde, nicht war,	didn’t exist before I came to be
und daß einmal ich, der ich bin,	and that someday the one who I am
nicht mehr der ich bin, sein werde?	will no longer be the one I am?

würgte es am Spinat, an den Erbsen, am Milchreis,	it choked on spinach, peas, rice pudding

erwachte es einmal in einem fremden Bett	it once woke up in a strange bed
