IL SINGOLARE MAGGIO DI TRESSA | THE RARE MAYDAY SONG OF TRESSA |
Di giubilo ogni alma accendasi | May all souls light up with joy, |
E lieta prendasi spasso e piacer, | Have good time in glee and mirth, |
E allegrisi, orquanto può, | And rejoice as much as they can |
Perché il bellissimo maggio tornò. | Now that delightful May is back. |
Le passere liete saltellano | So happy, the sparrows are fluttering |
E insiem s'abbellano col becco lor, | And look so pretty with their bills, |
E mostrano, or qua, or là, | Showing with all their flapping |
Quant'è gustevole la libertà. | How freedom is pleasant to all of us. |
Le lodole festose cantano | So joyful, the larks are singing |
E il dorso ammantano coi rai del sol, | And wrap their back in the sunrays, |
E dicono, col canto lor, | Telling us with all their singing |
Che amor dolcissimo gli punse il cor. | That sweet love struck them in the heart. |
Dilettaci col soavissimo canto, | The lovely and graceful nightingale |
Il carissimo vago usignuol, | Delights us with its gentlest song, |
E invitaci col suo cantar | And calls us now by all its singing |
Or l'amenissimo maggio a lodar. | To praise the joyous month of May. |
La florida stagion bellissima | And we hope for abundant harvest |
Messe ricchissime promette a ognun, | In all this wonderful time of the year, |
Ma tolgonci sí bel piacer | Yet of all this pleasure we are deprived |
Tant'arme orribili, tanti guerrier. | By dreadful weapons, by men at war. |
Gli strepiti, ahi!, che rimbombano | Alas! All the roaring clamour |
D'armi che inondano il fosco suol, | Of weapons is filling the sullen earth, |
E sentasi che errando va | And you can hear Mars wandering, |
Marte terribile, or qua, or là. | Bringing his terror through all the land. |
Deh, rendine, diranno, o amabile | But hearken, you sweetest Bridegroom, |
Sposo, una stabile pace a ogni cuor | Give lasting peace to every heart, |
E spengasi, per tua pietà, | And, by your mercy, may all the wrath |
L'ira dei prìncipi che errando va. | Of noble princes finally cool down. |
