OriginalVersion française – LE TAMBOUR (ODE XIII) – Marco Valdo M.I....
THE DRUM (ODE XIII)LE TAMBOUR (ODE XIII)

I hate that drum’s discordant sound,Je hais le bruit du tambour et ce son
Parading round, and round, and round:Qui parade en rond, rond, rond
To thoughtless youth it pleasure yields,Pour le plaisir de jeunes abrutis
And lures from cities and from fields,Et les attire des villes et des campagnes
To sell their liberty for charmsPour vendre leur liberté pour les charmes
Of tawdry lace, and glittering arms;De dentelles minables et de bras jolis.
And when Ambition’s voice commands,Et quand la voix de l’Ambition a commandé :
To march, and fight, and fall, in foreign lands.Marcher, combattre, et tomber, en pays étrangers.

I hate that drum’s discordant sound,Je hais le bruit du tambour et ce son
Parading round, and round, and round:Qui parade en rond, rond, rond.
To me it talks of ravag’d plains,À moi, il parle de champs ravagés,
And burning towns, and ruin’d swains,De villes en feu et de galants massacrés,
And mangled limbs, and dying groans,De membres mutilés, de râles de mourants,
And widow’s tears, and orphans moans;De larmes de veuves et de pleurs d’enfants
And all that misery’s hand bestows,Et toute cette misère écrit de sa main
To fill the catalogue of human woes.Le catalogue des malheurs humains.
