I feel I'd like to be alone
Хотел бы я побыть:with you, friend, if you'll stay:
На свете мало, говорят,my time on earth is nearly gone;
Мне остается жить!at least that's what they say.
And you'll be going home on leave:
Смотри ж... моей судьбой,mind you...what odds? I do believe,
Сказать по правде, оченьto tell the truth, not many
Никто не озабочен.will give a brass halfpenny.

If anyone should ask of you...
Ну, кто бы ни спросил,well, anyone at all...
Скажи им, что навылет в грудьyou tell them where that bullet flew
Я пулей ранен был,right through the chest, one ball:
Что умер честно за царя,"He died with honor for the Tsar"
Что плохи наши лекаря--and say how bad our surgeons are--
И что родному краю"and to his habitation
Поклон я посылаю.he sent his salutation."

You'll likely find that my old dad
Застанешь ты в живых...and mother both are dead...
I wouldn't want to make them sad
Мне опечалить их;or send them tears to shed;
Но если кто из них и жив,but if you find that they're all right,
Скажи, что я писать ленив,just say I haven't time to write,
И чтоб меня не ждали.and there's no use complaining.

They've got a woman neighbor there...
God knows how long ago
Обо мне онаwe parted!..She will hardly care
все равно,to ask you...Let it go,
Ты расскажи всю правду ей,tell her the truth, leave out no part,
Пустого сердца не жалей;no need to spare an empty heart;
Пускай она поплачет..she'll shed a tear or two there...
Ей ничего не значит!but it means nothing to her!
